Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent following an alleged attack outside a Merseyside golf club that left its victim hospitalised with injuries serious enough to risk permanent sight loss.

The alleged assault took place on the evening of Sunday, 8 March 2025, near the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club at approximately 9:00 PM. Kevin Lynch, 51, a headteacher and former non-league football manager, was found with significant injuries to his face and ribs. Prosecutors told the court there is a possibility Lynch may suffer irreversible damage to his eyesight and lose the sight in one eye. He was described as being in a serious but stable condition.

Barton, 43, of Fox Bank Close, Widnes, Cheshire, was charged alongside Gary O'Grady, 50, a roofer from Seel Road, Huyton, Merseyside. Both men faced Section 18 wounding with intent, one of the most serious non-fatal offences under English law, and both vehemently denied the charge.

CCTV footage shown to the court captured Barton and Lynch in what prosecution counsel Chelsea Kearns described as "a heated discussion" inside the clubhouse before the men moved outside, where a witness reported seeing a man being assaulted and called an ambulance. Neighbours reported seeing a man covered in blood on the ground. Merseyside Police subsequently conducted fingertip searches of surrounding pavements and gardens. All three men were known to each other and are registered members of the £1,440-a-year club.

Lynch founded NexGen Academy, a Liverpool school for children with additional needs, and previously managed Prescot Cables FC, Marine AFC, and City of Liverpool FC at non-league level.

Barton first appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on 10 March 2025, where District Judge James Hatton remanded him in custody. A subsequent bail application before Judge David Potter at Liverpool Crown Court was refused, with the majority of that hearing conducted in private. O'Grady was released on conditional bail, with conditions including that he not enter the golf club or contact the alleged victim or a named witness. Both men were due at Liverpool Crown Court on 7 April 2025 for a plea hearing, with Barton represented by Simon Csoka KC.

The charge arrived at a particularly precarious moment in Barton's legal history. In November 2024, a Liverpool Crown Court jury convicted him of sending grossly offensive social media posts targeting broadcaster Jeremy Vine and former footballers Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward. He was sentenced in December 2024 to six months in custody suspended for 18 months. The sentencing judge noted Barton was "not a man of previous good character," citing prior convictions that include a six-month prison term in May 2008 for common assault and affray in Liverpool city centre and a four-month suspended sentence in July 2008 for actual bodily harm. The new GBH charge put the suspended term at direct risk of activation.

On the same day as his initial magistrates' appearance, a High Court ruling ordered Barton to pay Aluko more than £300,000 in damages and legal costs following her libel claim over posts he had made about her on X. Aluko's barrister Gervase de Wilde informed the court that Barton "is currently being held in custody."

Barton, who earned a single England cap during a playing career spanning Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Burnley, Marseille and Rangers, later managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. His podcast, "Common Sense with Joey Barton," continued posting to social media throughout his detention.
