Kapaʻa Homesteads Tank Work on Kawaihau Road Extended to May 2026
Kawaihau Road work between Kaʻapuni/Kaapuni Road and Kapahi Road in Kapaʻa will continue through May 2026, with weekday one-lane closures 8 a.m.–3:30 p.m. and no parking in work zones.

The Kaua‘i Department of Water (DOW) and its contractor, identified on DOW notices as Hawaiian Dredging Company, Inc., have extended utility and excavation work on Kawaihau Road through May 2026, the agency announced. The work zone runs along Kawaihau Road roughly from Kapuni/Kaapuni Road at Kapahi Park to the Kapahi Road intersection, and motorists should expect weekday one-lane closures and delays during the project.
The work supports the Kapaʻa/ Kapaa Homesteads Tank Project, which will construct two half-million-gallon storage tanks and carry out necessary storm drain improvements. Contractors will also install approximately 1,700 linear feet of water lines in 16-inch and 12-inch diameters and related appurtenances as part of the project scope.
Traffic impacts are scheduled on weekdays only, with one-lane closures possible in either direction from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Motorists are asked to obey all posted signs, traffic controls and flaggers, and to use caution when driving over roadway steel plates. Parking will not be allowed in the designated work zones, access to properties within the work area will be provided, and drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time.
Earlier local reports had listed the work extended through Feb. 28, but DOW’s notice and the county’s release list May 2026 as the current end date for the Kawaihau Road work. The department’s public statement about the extension said, “Every effort will be made to complete this project efficiently and with minimal disruption. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to improve the water system in your community.”
For questions about the schedule or impacts, the contractor contact provided in media notices is Chansen Oshiro at Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., (808) 397-9627, and the Department of Water contact is Scott Suga at (808) 245-5411. DOW’s advisory notes that all work is weather permitting and the schedule is subject to change.
