KPMG in South Africa has elected Joelene Pierce as its next chief executive, with the appointment to take effect on 1 March 2026 following the retirement of Ignatius Sehoole. The partner vote took place on 31 July 2025 and, according to KPMG’s announcement, signals not only the strength of expertise that Pierce brings to the firm, but also that the newly elected CEO offers unparalleled expertise in both leading the business, as well as understanding the unique and dynamic nature of the client and economic environment in which it operates.

Pierce was chosen by partners in what Consultancy.co.za describes as a process that allows participation by around 150 partners. Her elevation completes a planned succession: Ignatius Sehoole will step down and retire on 1 March 2026 after a tenure that Consultancy reports as six years as CEO.

A 26-year KPMG veteran, Pierce has been a Partner for 19 years. She currently serves as Head of Financial Services in South Africa and is a member of the KPMG South Africa Policy Board. Consultancy notes that she comes from the firm’s Audit business, and the firm and media coverage list her sector expertise across retail banking, corporate treasuries, securities trading and asset-based securitisation structures. KPMG says Pierce has worked with most of the firm’s top 10 clients.

In a statement attributed to her ahead of the transition, Joelene Pierce said: “I am extremely grateful and honoured to take on this new role and build on the strong foundations created during Ignatius’ tenure. I am committed to remaining focused on transformation and ethical practice, as well as embedding critical thinking into the business. This will ensure that, in addition to continuing the strong focus on instilling trust in the brand, we continue to expand the firm’s role in social and economic development. With a strong client base across different sectors, building on this will be a priority, along with continued development for our people and culture.”

For employees, the announcement points to continuity in client-facing strategy while underscoring an internal emphasis on transformation, ethics and professional development. Pierce’s long tenure and experience in audit and financial services suggest leadership that knows the firm’s largest clients and its internal governance structures, which may ease transition risks for client teams and shared services. The partner-vote process also reaffirms the role that partners play in governance and leadership selection in KPMG’s South Africa firm.

The appointment drew visible social reaction on KPMG South Africa’s LinkedIn page, where the firm posted the announcement to its audience of 230,825 followers and the post registered thousands of reactions and comments. Commenters praised the choice, including Mpho Matsitse: “Outstanding appointment, KPMG South Africa. Congratulations Joelene Pierce, so excited to watch a new era unfold under your leadership ✨️” and Nonkululeko Gobodo, Chief Executive Officer at AWAKENED Global: “Congratulations Joelene. We wish you all the success for this important role, in our profession 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.”

What comes next for staff is a formal handover and more detail on Pierce’s operational priorities and leadership team. KPMG has set a clear transition date of 1 March 2026; employees and clients can expect further briefings, a full leadership biography and operational plans as the firm prepares for the change of command.
