With Karachi Kings still 14 runs short and the final over approaching, the umpires intervened. Five penalty runs were credited to the Kings after they deemed Pakistan international Fakhar Zaman had broken the laws by "unfairly changing the condition of the ball." What had been a tense finish was settled three deliveries later; Karachi won by four wickets, and Lahore Qalandars were left facing a disciplinary hearing that has already been adjourned until Monday.

The penalty's impact was immediate. With nine now needed from six balls rather than 14, Karachi reached their target of 131 in 19.3 overs. The ball was also changed at the request of the batting side before those final six deliveries were bowled. Lahore had posted 128-9 from their 20 overs, a score that appeared competitive enough until the disruption before the last over altered the match's arithmetic entirely.

Before the controversy, the contest had been tightly fought. Abdullah Shafique top-scored for Lahore with 33 off 24 balls, but Karachi's bowling held firm. Adam Zampa took 2-11 and Moeen Ali chipped in with 2-32. In the chase, Waseem anchored Karachi's reply with 38 off 37 balls, while Shaheen Afridi's figures of 4-18 gave Lahore genuine hope before the penalty intervened.

Fakhar Zaman, 35, who has played 215 times for Pakistan, denied the allegation at a hearing convened immediately after the match. Under Law 41.3.2, which states "it is an offence for any player to take any action which changes the condition of the ball," the umpires reported the matter for further action. PSL playing conditions require the match referee to take "action as is considered appropriate against the players concerned." That process remains ongoing.

Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Afridi, who had done everything with the ball to keep his side in contention, offered a measured response when asked about the incident. "I don't know about this. We will see if it is that in the camera. We will discuss," he said.

One figure on the winning side arrived with his own complicated history with ball tampering. Karachi's captain David Warner was banned by Cricket Australia for 12 months for his role in the ball-tampering scandal of 2018, lending an unavoidable irony to his position on the victorious side.

The PSL and the Pakistan Cricket Board have been approached for comment. No ruling on potential sanctions against Fakhar Zaman had been issued before proceedings were adjourned; the outcome will be determined when the hearing resumes on Monday.
