Lakers Clinch Pacific Division Title, Nuggets and Pistons Also Lock Up Spots
The Lakers clinched their second straight Pacific Division title when Orlando beat Phoenix 115-111, capping a 15-2 run that lifted LA from play-in bubble to postseason certainty.

The Los Angeles Lakers clinched their second consecutive Pacific Division title without even taking the floor Tuesday night, as the Orlando Magic's 115-111 upset of the Phoenix Suns rendered Los Angeles's postseason status official before the Lakers tipped off against Cleveland at Crypto.com Arena.
The clinch came after one of the more remarkable turnarounds of the NBA regular season. As late as February, the Lakers were hovering on the edge of the Play-In Tournament bubble. Then came a 15-2 stretch between February 28 and March 30 that included a nine-game winning streak and signature victories over the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and the Houston Rockets twice. Los Angeles entered March 31 having won 12 of its last 13 games, carrying a 49-26 record and the third seed in the Western Conference behind only the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs.
LeBron James was central to that surge. A night before the clinch, James delivered a 21-point, 10-rebound, 12-assist triple-double against the Washington Wizards, drawing a reaction from head coach JJ Redick that said everything without saying much. "I'll just say he's very praise-worthy," Redick told reporters afterward. "I don't know what else to say about him at this point." Supporting the charge, Deandre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes combined for 31 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks while going a perfect 13-for-13 from the field in the same contest. Luka Doncic, another cornerstone of the Lakers' core, missed one recent game while serving a suspension for his 16th technical foul of the season.
The Lakers were not alone in securing their postseason fate on March 31. The Denver Nuggets also clinched a playoff berth on their day off, benefiting from the same Suns loss to Orlando. It marks Denver's eighth consecutive playoff appearance. Nikola Jokic is averaging a triple-double for the second straight season, Jamal Murray is having what analysts consider the best campaign of his career, and Tim Hardaway Jr. has drawn serious Sixth Man of the Year consideration. The Nuggets, sitting at 48-28 and riding a six-game winning streak into April, lead the league in scoring at 121.3 points per game and in 3-point shooting percentage. Los Angeles and Denver could meet in the postseason for the third time in four years.
The night's most striking subplot belonged to the Detroit Pistons, who clinched the Central Division title with a 127-116 win over the Toronto Raptors to improve to 55-21. Two seasons ago, Detroit went 14-68 and tied the league record with 28 consecutive losses. That transformation from historically bad to division champion stands as one of the most dramatic reversals in recent NBA history.
With the SoFi Play-In Tournament beginning April 14 and the first round of the playoffs tipping off April 18, seeding battles across both conferences remain unsettled. The Lakers' third seed projects to a first-round matchup against the sixth-seeded Houston Rockets, while the LA Clippers, after losing to Portland on March 31, were locked into the Play-In bracket. The NBA Finals are scheduled to begin June 3 on ABC, but the road there runs through a final stretch of the regular season that has already redrawn several franchises' fortunes entirely.
