A 19-year-old Londoner on a gap year adventure through South East Asia died on 2 April after a motorbike crash on the Ha Giang Loop, a celebrated 350-kilometre mountain route in northern Vietnam that has claimed the lives of several foreign tourists in recent years. Orla Wates, who had been due to begin a degree at Durham University, was pronounced dead at Hà Nội's Việt Đức Friendship Hospital, with her parents at her bedside.

Orla had been travelling as a pillion passenger when her motorcycle driver lost control on the Loop, which winds through dramatic highlands near Vietnam's border with China. She was thrown from the bike and struck by an oncoming truck, leaving her with extensive injuries. Despite the efforts of Dr Trịnh Văn Đồng and his intensive care unit team at Việt Đức Friendship Hospital, she could not be saved.

Her parents, Andy and Henrietta Wates, known as Mic Mac, described their daughter as "beautiful, independent and very funny," with a sharp wit who "loved to look good and lived life to the full." Andy Wates, a director of the Wates Group, a family-owned British construction firm valued at £2.4 billion, said Orla had been "loving every minute" of her time in the country. "Vietnam was a country she loved and so to give back to Vietnam as well I think is very important for us," he said, in remarks shared on the hospital's social media page.

That tribute took a remarkable form. In the immediate aftermath of Orla's death, her parents agreed to donate her organs. Her liver, two kidneys and two corneas were transplanted to five critically ill Vietnamese patients at the same hospital where she died. Henrietta Wates said: "At this extremely difficult time for our family, we chose to donate Orla's organs, as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted. Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort." A hospital representative described the decision as "a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race." Vietnam's Minister of Health wrote a letter of condolence and gratitude to the family in recognition of the gesture.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed its consular staff were supporting the Wates family, stating: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam." The FCDO's existing travel guidance for Vietnam already flags that "British nationals have died or been injured in Vietnam while engaged in adventure tourism in rural and mountainous areas."

The Ha Giang Loop has drawn growing numbers of backpackers and gap-year travellers in recent years, typically taking three to four days to complete by motorcycle. The route's appeal is matched by its hazards: steep mountain passes, unpredictable weather, poor road surfaces, and heavy vehicles sharing narrow roads with motorbikes. Previous deaths include a Spanish tourist who fell from a mountain pass in 2017 and two foreign nationals, a Spaniard and a French citizen, killed in a head-on truck collision in 2018. The cause of the crash that killed Orla remains under investigation.

Vietnam introduced stricter road traffic enforcement across the country from 1 January 2025 under Decree 168/2024, with police in tourist areas including Ha Giang issuing heavier fines and stiffer penalties for violations. Whether those measures will reduce the toll on one of South East Asia's most dramatic and dangerous routes remains to be seen.
