Los Alamos County Social Services Offer Monthly Evening Help at White Rock
Los Alamos County social services began monthly evening help at the White Rock Branch Library on Jan. 19 to assist residents with housing, utility, food-security and referral needs.

Los Alamos County Social Services began offering monthly evening in-person hours at the White Rock Branch Library on Jan. 19, expanding access to housing, utility, food-security and referral services for residents who cannot visit during regular business hours. County staff will meet one-on-one with residents in a study room at the White Rock library, and no appointment is required.
The county designed the evening sessions to lower barriers to services that often require daytime visits. By locating staff in the library after normal business hours, Social Services is using a familiar community hub to reach parents, workers on nontraditional schedules, seniors and others for whom daytime access is difficult. The notice from the county lists the typical services available and encourages residents to attend the monthly sessions.
Holding sessions in a study room provides privacy for casework and consultations while leveraging the library’s role as a public access point. County Social Services staff will be able to provide direct assistance and make referrals where needed, addressing immediate needs such as food-security and utility help, as well as longer-term housing inquiries and connections to community programs.
For White Rock residents, the change means fewer missed opportunities to apply for assistance or to follow up on ongoing cases because of work, caregiving duties or transportation constraints. It also situates social support within a civic space that many residents already use for study, meetings and community events, which may reduce the stigma some feel when seeking help.
The county’s move reflects a practical approach to outreach: bringing services closer to where people already gather, rather than requiring them to navigate daytime schedules or travel to county offices. Libraries in small communities often serve as neutral, centralized sites for public services; the White Rock Branch will now act in that capacity on a monthly evening basis.
Residents interested in the evening sessions should look for notices at the White Rock Branch Library or contact Los Alamos County Social Services for the schedule and any additional details. By offering no-appointment, one-on-one help during evening hours, the county aims to make essential services more reachable for the full range of Los Alamos County households, and to reduce gaps in access that can affect housing stability, food security and basic utilities.
