Oz Pearlman was in the middle of performing a magic trick for Donald Trump when the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner was jolted by gunfire, forcing one of Washington’s most choreographed nights into confusion and cover.

Pearlman, the featured entertainer at the 2026 dinner, later said he and Trump were "side-by-side" after Secret Service agents forced the president down. In the chaos, Pearlman said he locked eyes with Trump and thought, "Oh no, are we about to die?" He also said Trump's "eyes weren't registering," adding that the president seemed to be in shock.

The shooting unfolded around 8:35 p.m. ET on April 25, 2026, in the Washington Hilton lobby area, where about 2,300 guests had gathered for the annual dinner. Law enforcement said a suspect charged a Secret Service checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives. Officers intercepted and detained the man, later identified as Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.

A Secret Service agent was injured in the incident, but no one was killed. The episode immediately raised questions about security at one of the most visible political gatherings in the country, where presidents, journalists and government officials mix in close quarters under tight protection and public scrutiny.

Pearlman told ABC News that he was on stage when shots rang out outside the ballroom, with Trump, first lady Melania Trump and press secretary Karoline Leavitt nearby. The scene changed within seconds from performance to protective response, as agents moved Trump down and those close to the stage tried to understand whether the threat was still unfolding inside the building.

Trump later said the event should continue, then said it would be rescheduled within 30 days. The dinner, a fixture of the capital’s political calendar, was the first White House Correspondents’ Dinner Trump had attended as a sitting president.

The shooting also landed in a national climate already shaped by repeated political violence in the United States, including prior assassination attempts against Trump. At a gathering built around ritual, press access and presidential visibility, the fear in the room was immediate and personal, and the distance between performance and danger disappeared in an instant.
