Man found dead in Quitman home on Thompson Avenue; police say accidental

A family member went to a residence on the 100 block of Thompson Avenue in the town of Quitman after not hearing from a relative and discovered the man deceased inside, prompting a 911 call and a police response, officials said. The man is described as being in his mid-40s and used a walker for mobility; authorities say he appears to have slipped and fallen inside the home, striking his head.

Quitman Police Chief Chris Read said preliminary findings indicate the death appears to be accidental. "The mark on his head is consistent with an accidental fall," Read said. "At this time, there is no indication of foul play."

Officers with the Quitman Police Department arrived on scene along with investigators and emergency medical personnel, and the Clarke County coroner assisted at the residence, authorities reported. The initial response occurred on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2026, when emergency crews and investigators processed the 100 block of Thompson Avenue after the family member's call to 911.

Officials said the investigation remains in its early stages and that nothing currently suggests criminal activity. No names are being released pending notification of next of kin, and police said they will provide updates as more information becomes available.

The incident took place in Quitman, the municipality inside Clarke County, not Quitman County, a distinction officials emphasized to avoid confusion with other jurisdictions of the same name. Investigators did not disclose a time of death, whether an autopsy will be performed, or additional scene details while the inquiry continues.

Police reiterated that the preliminary determination is accidental and that further information will be released after investigators and the coroner complete their work and after family notification procedures are finished.
