That dependence became even clearer on 9 May 2026, when Casemiro was ruled out of United’s trip to Sunderland with a minor knock. For a squad already preparing for his exit, the absence was a reminder that the problem is not just losing a name from the team sheet. It is losing a player who has delivered 33 league appearances, nine goals, two assists, 2,507 minutes, 184 duels won, 88 tackles and 30 interceptions in 2025/26 alone.
United confirmed on 22 January 2026 that Casemiro would leave at the end of the 2025/26 season when his contract expires. His departure will close a four-year spell at Old Trafford, where he arrived on 22 August 2022 and has made 146 appearances, scoring 21 goals. United need either a midfielder who can absorb the defensive workload while offering enough progression and control, or a broader tactical reshaping that reduces the burden on one position.
Michael Carrick has already framed the challenge, saying Casemiro has been “a pleasure to work with” and is likely to be difficult to replace. That judgment is backed by the results. United’s four league games without him starting have all ended without a win, underlining how fragile the midfield can look once his presence disappears.
The club has also been planning around the wider contract picture, with Casemiro’s deal expiring alongside other senior players and an optional extra year built into his terms. But the immediate task is clearer than the long-term sentiment. United are about to lose an aging, high-output midfielder whose role has been central to the way the side functions. Filling that gap will require smarter squad building, not just another defensive midfielder.
