Matlock stars tease explosive season finale as CBS reveals new clues

CBS is closing out Matlock’s second season with a two-hour finale that doubles down on the formula that made the series a breakout: a familiar brand rebuilt around a sharper, more contemporary hook. The episodes, titled Who Are You? and Matty Matlock, will air Thursday, April 23, from 9:01-11:00 PM ET/PT and stream on Paramount+, with the team facing an unexpected final hurdle in its bid to bring Senior to justice for his role in the Wellbrexa cover-up.

The finale also widens the case load. CBS says the team will defend an airport ramp operator accused of safety negligence in the death of a passenger, a reminder that Matlock has paired serialized family and firm intrigue with the kind of standalone legal conflict broadcast TV still uses to hold casual viewers. Gina Rodriguez guest stars, adding another familiar face to a cast led by Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, with Skye P. Marshall as Olympia and Jason Ritter as Julian, Olympia’s ex-husband and the son of the head of the firm.

That broad, accessible setup has been central to the show’s rise. CBS renewed Matlock for a second season after just two episodes aired, a decisive vote of confidence that followed a Sept. 22, 2024 premiere that drew 7.73 million same-day viewers and climbed to 10.67 million viewers with three days of multiplatform viewing. CBS said the premiere was the network’s most-watched series premiere in five years, excluding post-Super Bowl programming. In a fragmented market, those numbers point to a broadcast remake strategy that still works when an old title is given a new engine.

The reinvention matters as much as the ratings. This Matlock is not a straightforward return to the Andy Griffith-led series that defined the title in the 1980s and 1990s. It centers on a brilliant lawyer with a hidden agenda, and Bates has said the show is exploring the “invisibility” of women of a certain age. That theme gives the reboot a clear point of view and helps explain why the series has traveled beyond nostalgia. The brand is recognizable, but the storytelling is built for a newer audience that expects more secrecy, more serial tension and more emotional friction.

Marshall has already described the finale as explosive, and the setup suggests why. Between the Wellbrexa case, the airport death lawsuit and Olympia’s growing awareness of Matty’s secret, Matlock is heading into its finale with the kind of pressure that has turned a legacy name into one of CBS’s most durable surprises.
