Matt Fitzpatrick beats Scottie Scheffler in playoff to win RBC Heritage
Matt Fitzpatrick outdueled Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at Harbour Town, winning the RBC Heritage and strengthening his case as Scheffler’s sharpest challenger.

Matt Fitzpatrick answered Scottie Scheffler’s late charge with a shot that landed the tournament. On the first playoff hole at Harbour Town Golf Links, Fitzpatrick hit a 4-iron from 204 yards to 13 feet and rolled in birdie to win the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The victory gave Fitzpatrick his fourth PGA Tour title, his second RBC Heritage crown and $3.6 million. It also extended a fast-moving spring run for the Englishman, who claimed the Valspar Championship in March and became one of only two players, along with Chris Gotterup, with two PGA Tour wins in the 2026 season.
Scheffler, the world No. 1 and defending champion, forced extra holes with birdies at the 15th and 16th and a final-round 67. He had trailed by three shots with four holes to play before mounting the late push that made the finish tense and loud, with the crowd at Harbour Town firmly behind the American and chanting “U-S-A” as the playoff unfolded. Fitzpatrick closed with a 70, Scheffler with a 67.
For Fitzpatrick, the win carried a familiar shape. He also captured the RBC Heritage in 2023 in a playoff, that time over Jordan Spieth, and Sunday’s result made him the first foreign-born player to win the event twice. Fitzpatrick said the victory took “a lot of grit” and called it “special,” a fitting description for a title he had long circled because his family used to vacation at Harbour Town while he was growing up.
The result widened the lens beyond one Sunday finish and into the sport’s early-season hierarchy. Scheffler has set the standard at the top of the game, but Fitzpatrick’s second win in five weeks gives him a stronger claim than most to challenge that order. After a runner-up finish to Rory McIlroy at the Masters the previous week, Scheffler again came up just short, while Fitzpatrick left Hilton Head with momentum, a second Heritage trophy and a clearer place in the PGA Tour’s spring conversation.
