Mavericks part ways with Jason Kidd after five seasons
Jason Kidd was out after five seasons as Dallas opened a search that signals a deeper reset under Masai Ujiri. The move came two weeks after Ujiri arrived and after a 26-56 collapse.

Dallas moved on from Jason Kidd on Tuesday, severing ties with the coach who took the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024, but finished this season at 26-56. The organization said it had “mutually agreed to part ways” with Kidd and would immediately begin a comprehensive search for his replacement.
The timing points to more than a routine coaching change. Masai Ujiri arrived as president and alternate governor on May 4, 2026, and within two weeks the franchise had already pivoted toward a new direction. With Ujiri and owner Patrick Dumont now steering basketball operations, Dallas is signaling that the problems exposed by this season reach beyond the bench and into the structure of the roster and the expectations built around it.

Kidd had coached Dallas since June 2021 and had just signed a multiyear extension in October 2025, making the breakup especially abrupt. Reports said he had four years and more than $40 million remaining on the deal, a financial commitment that made league skepticism about a firing understandable. Even with the contract weight, the Mavericks chose to reset after a season that collapsed far below contender standards.

The decision also raises the question of what Dallas believes about the current roster. A coach who produced deep playoff runs only two years ago did not survive the same organization’s slide to 26 wins this season, suggesting the front office no longer viewed continuity as enough. The move places the burden on Ujiri and Dumont to prove that the next coach can work within a redesigned plan, not simply stabilize a franchise that has already reached two high points under Kidd and then fallen sharply.

For Dallas, this is now a timeline decision as much as a coaching one. The Mavericks have traded the uncertainty of a lucrative contract for the certainty of a search, and the choice ahead will reveal how aggressively the franchise intends to reshape itself after a season that forced a reckoning.
