Mayor Dean Vonderheide Announces Candidacy for Dubois County Commissioner
Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide, mayor since 2018, announced Feb. 15 he will run for Dubois County Commissioner and will remain mayor through March 31, 2026.

Jasper Mayor Dean Vonderheide announced Feb. 15 that he will seek election as Dubois County Commissioner while remaining in office to complete his current term through March 31, 2026. Vonderheide has served as mayor of Jasper since 2018 and framed the move as a shift in focus from municipal leadership to county-level service.
Vonderheide told local reporters he is “eager to bring his executive experience and robust energy to the county level” and cast the commissioner role as a way to “remain engaged and continue contributing to a bright future for Jasper and Dubois County.” He added, “I have lived out a dream by serving this community, and I am not finished yet,” and said, “I look forward to bringing my passion and experience to the County Commission to ensure our region continues to thrive.”
As mayor, Vonderheide has led Jasper through what local coverage described as economic uncertainty and aging infrastructure; he cited that municipal executive experience as preparation for strengthening the relationship between city and county governments. His stated aims for a county commission bid include improving communication among local governments, sharing resources more effectively, and encouraging collaboration across local government bodies.
Vonderheide said his decision to step away from full-time municipal leadership was intended to reduce work commitments and allow him to focus on family. He emphasized the move is not related to health concerns and that he “remains in excellent health.” Local coverage also described the rationale in similar terms, saying he intended to reduce outside commitments and devote more time to family.

The Dubois County Republican Party will hold a caucus to select a replacement Jasper mayor; the caucus is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday at Jasper City Hall. A local newsletter named Phil Mundy and Ryan Craig as the two candidates who will be considered to finish Vonderheide’s mayoral term and noted the caucus “starts at 6 and is expected to be done fairly quickly.” The newsletter, issued as From Dubois County, was signed by editors Matthew and Amy Crane.
Several specific campaign details remain unreported: Vonderheide has not, in the material released so far, identified which Dubois County Commission district he intends to seek, whether he has filed official campaign paperwork with county or state election officials, or whether the seat he plans to run for is currently held by an incumbent. Those questions would shape the timeline for a primary or general election contest and the county-level policy issues he would inherit on the Commission.
