Mother and Two Children Found Dead in Lakewood Ranch Murder‑Suicide
Monika Rubacha, 44, and her children Josh, 14, and Emma, 11, were found dead inside their Lake Club home after deputies responding to a welfare check entered a “violent scene.”

Monika Rubacha, 44, and her children Josh James, 14, and Emma James, 11, were discovered dead inside their gated Lake Club home in Lakewood Ranch after Manatee County deputies responded to a welfare check at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26. Deputies went to the 8200 block of Pavia Way at the request of the homeowner, who was out of the country and had been unable to contact his wife and children, authorities said.
Deputies “observed circumstances that prompted them to enter the residence” and found the 14-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl in separate rooms and the 44-year-old woman deceased in another room, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office investigators said. MCSO spokesman Randy Warren described the interior as “This is a violent scene.” Investigators reported that the children “showed evidence of what investigators described as 'homicidal violence'” and that all three sustained traumatic injuries.
Investigators are treating the case as a murder-suicide. Warren said preliminary evidence indicates the mother killed her two children and then herself, and that investigators saw signs the act had been planned. “There was some planning involved ... she knew what she was doing,” Warren said. Officials also said, “There was no one else who entered the home or left the scene,” and that preliminary work suggests no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
The homeowner who requested the welfare check was abroad in South America when deputies arrived; a report identified him as Richard James, and some accounts say he grew concerned after being unable to reach his family for roughly a day and a half. Local investigators withheld names initially to allow notification of relatives living abroad; authorities later released the victims’ names as Monika Rubacha, Josh James and Emma James.
Neighbors and community leaders were told investigators remained on scene Friday morning as detectives continued evidence collection and interviews. The Lake Club homeowners’ association issued a written statement offering condolences to the family. Local records indicate the family moved to Lakewood Ranch about three years ago from Missouri; deputies said they had no prior dispatch history to the address.
The Manatee County Medical Examiner will determine official causes and the manner of death. MCSO officials called the investigation active and ongoing and said they are compiling evidence and records for the medical examiner’s review. The sheriff’s office emphasized investigators’ confidence that all parties connected to the scene have been accounted for, but officials declined to release further details about the nature of the planning evidence while detectives continue their work.
