When Steve Frye retired from his job as a high school math teacher in 2020, he set out to build a business that reflected his interests and community ties. On Dec. 19 he opened FryeGuys Pickleball Club, a 9,000-square-foot indoor facility that brings year-round play to Clifton Park and a lower-priced membership option to local players.

“This was the first idea I had for a job for something I could own,” Frye said. “We wanted a place where people could come in, have a good time for a reasonable price, so that they could play the sport that they love so much.” The club’s membership began at $20 per month, and by Dec. 23 more than 150 people had signed up.

The facility, at 1319 Route 146, features three blue-and-green cement courts coated with layers of acrylic paint and rubber to give the surface “a little bounce to it,” Frye said. Courts are lit by LED lighting, surrounded by movable court dividers and padded walls, and the building is climate-controlled by an HVAC system. Players will also find changing rooms and a small kitchenette, plus visual touches such as a logo that shows an animated pickleball holding a paddle and a statue made from pickleballs on site.

Ann Frye, who manages the club’s social media and website, welcomed the milestone. “Steve has been working on opening a pickleball business for a while, so it’s really exciting to see it all come together,” she said.

For the Clifton Park community, FryeGuys offers practical value in several ways. The price point lowers the barrier to entry for new and casual players, indoor courts allow play regardless of weather, and the facility’s design accommodates both beginners and more experienced players. Frye has said he hopes to partner with local schools to introduce students to the sport and to expand community use of the courts.

The club is positioned as a community-run space managed by Frye and his wife, emphasizing inclusion and affordability rather than a high-cost, membership-only model. Players interested in visiting can go to the location on Route 146 or connect with the club through the Fryes’ online channels to inquire about membership, drop-in play and future programs.
