New York Mills Hosts Massed Band Concert, 220 Students, Dual Fundraiser
New York Mills School will stage a Massed Band concert at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9, bringing together about 220 students in grades 5–12 for a unified performance organized by Cary Armagost.

New York Mills School will stage a Massed Band concert at the NY Mills School Sports Center at 7 p.m. Monday, March 9, bringing together the entire 5–12th grade band of about 220 students in a single unified performance organized by instrumental music teacher Cary Armagost. The event is described as the first Massed Band of its kind at the school in recent years.
Promotional material accompanying the event title identifies admission as a dual fundraiser for instruments and the local food shelf, though published school coverage of the concert did not list a ticket price or detail which food shelf would receive proceeds. Organizers have not published a program or ticketing breakdown; those specifics remain to be confirmed by the school.
Armagost tied the concert to a personal music milestone, noting the program’s finale will be a medley he first played as a fifth grader in Little Falls. He said the medley resurfaced when he found it on a library shelf during his first year of teaching last year and that seeing it inspired the Massed Band idea: "When I saw that in the library, that's when the wheels started turning in my brain," he explained. "I would love to play this song, what if I got a Massed Band concert going? I didn't have the time last year and the concert schedule was already established, so I didn't have time to add that in. That's another thing I'm looking forward to, it's a nice little full-circle moment for me."
Armagost framed the event as an accessibility and enjoyment goal for community music: "I hope the community takes away from this that no matter how old you are, band can be fun," he said. "I just hope that they take away that band is fun and can be accessible to everybody, no matter the age."

The school’s senior high band has been active this season, performing at the Fine Arts Day celebration in New York Mills and at the large group contest in Pillager. The band, according to published coverage, received its first superior rating since 2023, an outcome Armagost said he hopes signals an upward trend in the district’s music program.
The venue name appears in school notices as the NY Mills School Sports Center, though local copy has at times styled it as NY Mills School Sport's Center; those planning to attend should note the Sports Center gym at the school campus on Main Street in New York Mills. The program runtime, exact student roster by grade, and whether the concert will be livestreamed or limited by seating capacity have not been published.
The Massed Band concert joins a busy local music schedule this winter: the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center hosted a December 21 concert featuring Nick Bordwell, Aaron Johnson and Keith Johnson, and lists its contact number as 218-385-3339 for event questions. Armagost has positioned the March 9 concert as both a community showcase and a milestone for students; whether admission will ultimately fund instruments and the food shelf will determine the event’s financial impact on school music resources and local charitable support.
