Nolan Wells' best friend says he skipped funeral after death threats

Nolan Wells’ best friend skipped the 18-year-old’s funeral in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, after death threats followed him through a case already clouded by rumors and viral speculation. He later said, “wish I could have been there,” as the fallout from Wells’ death spread well beyond the beach and into the most basic rituals of mourning.

The threats landed as Wells’ mother said the family had received anonymous hate mail that included a defaced photo of their legal team. Christine Wonsley and Elmore Wonsley had already described the death as full of “conflicting stories, implausible explanations and missing details,” and their attorney, Ben Crump, had pressed for a probe and the release of all records. What was supposed to be a time for a family to grieve instead became a security problem.

Wells died after a July 4 boat trip to Horn Island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, and the public focus quickly widened to everything from missing pictures to a call for help and a beach party that day. A high school friend told ABC News that a viral video from the gathering did not show an argument involving Wells, but instead showed the friend himself. “That’s my voice,” he said. People later reported that Wells’ best friend maintained the teen wanted to stay behind on Horn Island before his death.

The island itself has remained central to the case. Cajun Navy leader Shane Guidry warned that the search area around Horn Island has deadly “washing machine” currents and said there are “lots of drownings” there. The official state autopsy was conducted on July 7, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has approached the case as an accidental drowning. An independent autopsy by Dr. Roger Mitchell, president of the National Medical Association, found the cause of death remained “undetermined” and said foul play could not be ruled out.

The funeral service for Nolan Xavier Wells drew hundreds of mourners on July 20 in Ocean Springs. Rev. Al Sharpton spoke at the service, and Christine Wonsley, Elmore Wonsley, Elmore Jr. Wonsley and Ethan Wonsley were among the family members present, even as the threats, rumors and unresolved questions made clear that the harm around Wells’ death did not end when his life did.
