Northbound I-25 Reopens After Early-Morning Crash Near Castle Rock
A two-vehicle crash early Feb. 4 closed northbound I-25 near Castle Rock between Exits 174 and 181, blocking traffic for roughly two hours and sending one driver to a hospital.

A collision between a Ram pickup and a semitruck blocked all northbound lanes of Interstate 25 near Castle Rock early Wednesday, closing the highway between Tomah Road (Exit 174) and Plum Creek Parkway (Exit 181) and sending the Ram driver to an area hospital. The closure snarled morning traffic on a key commuter corridor through Douglas County before lanes reopened later in the morning.
The Colorado State Patrol, quoted by KOAA, summarized the scene: "The initial investigation shows a Ram pickup truck and a semi collided on the Interstate, causing the northbound lanes to be blocked." KOAA cited the Colorado Department of Transportation closure notice that read, "Between Exit 174: Tomah Road and Exit 181: Plum Creek Parkway (near Castle Rock) at Mile Point 180.7. Road closed expect delays due to a crash."
Troopers first responded to the crash area around 4:30–4:32 a.m., according to 9NEWS and KUSA reporting; CDOT posted the lane closure to its public feed just before 5 a.m., per KOAA. Outlets report slightly different reopening times: 9NEWS and Denver7 say all northbound lanes reopened at about 6:15 a.m., while KOAA’s timeline notes at least one lane opened around 6:10 a.m. and all lanes were back open about 6:25 a.m. The discrepancy highlights the challenge of establishing a single official timestamp without a formal CDOT or CSP confirmation.
Traffic congestion extended well beyond the closure window. Denver7 traffic expert Jayson Luber said, "No traffic could get through for nearly two hours, according to Luber, backing up to the Tomah Road exit," and advised that drivers use the Tomah Road exit and the frontage road to reach Castle Rock while northbound lanes were closed. Denver7 also reported southbound I-25 remained open during the incident. Traffic analysts noted it can take 15 to 20 minutes for a bottleneck to clear after lanes reopen, meaning commuting delays persisted even after official reopening.

The Colorado State Patrol asks anyone who witnessed the crash to contact CSP dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case number 1C260283. Local officials have not released additional details about the condition of the Ram driver beyond transport to a hospital, nor have they reported injuries to the semitruck driver, citations, or a probable cause for the collision.
For Douglas County commuters and officials, the crash underscores the importance of timely, coordinated public information from CSP and CDOT during incidents that affect I-25. Reconciling conflicting public timelines and releasing final incident reports remain important for community accountability and for understanding how emergency response and traffic management performed during the closure. If you witnessed the crash, call CSP dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case 1C260283; further updates are likely as investigators complete their work.
