Nye County School District clarifies student regulation on AI glasses, devices
Nye County School District said Feb. 20, 2026, that AI-enabled "smart" glasses with cameras and recording capabilities fall under Board Regulation 7363R on student cell-phone use.

The Nye County School District issued a districtwide press release dated February 20, 2026, saying it is clarifying how wearable tech will be treated on campus: “As wearable technology continues to evolve, the Nye County School District (NCSD) is proactively addressing the presence of AI-enabled eyewear on school campuses.” The release names AI-enabled “smart” glasses with built-in cameras and recording capabilities as falling under the district’s existing cell-phone regulation.
The press release states the clarification in specific terms: “To ensure a safe and focused learning environment, the District is clarifying that "smart" glasses (example), such as those with built-in cameras and recording capabilities, fall strictly under the guidelines of Board Regulation 7363R: Student Use of Cell Phones on School Property.” The document does not print the full text of Board Regulation 7363R, nor does it list disciplinary steps or operational language about powering off or storing devices.

NCSD paired the device clarification with safety resources and partnership details. The release highlights the district’s SafeVoice partnership with the Nevada Department of Public Safety and repeats SafeVoice language: “In partnership with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, the SafeVoice program provides students a safe place to submit tips concerning their own safety or that of others.” The release adds that “A fully trained professional team of experts responds in an appropriate manner 24/7/365. Tips always stay anonymous,” and directs users to “clicking on the link above or calling 833-216-SAFE.”
Public reaction in the district’s public-comment record shows a split between parents and students that complicates implementation. Pages 4, 5 and 24 of the district’s “Cell Phone Restriction Policy Proposal - Public Comments” include comments arguing classroom benefits for phones: “By leveraging the capabilities of cell phones, students can gather information, communicate, reflect, and collaborate in ways that resonate with their digital-native nature, leading to increased engagement and motivation to learn.” Other parent comments framed removal as punitive: “The Nye County School District's inability, or unwillingness to utilize or otherwise control this technological resource in a constructive way is not an excuse for removing it from the school experience.”
Health and accommodation concerns appear repeatedly in the public-comment file. An AI-generated summary included in the public comments notes: “Type 1 Diabetes: Three parents specifically mention their children having Type 1 diabetes and needing their phones to manage their condition. One parent explains that their child uses their phone to monitor blood sugar levels and communicate with them [...] the need for careful consideration of accommodations and exemptions to ensure that the policy does not negatively impact the health and well-being of these students.” The same notes characterize student responses as overwhelmingly opposed while many parents supported some restrictions.
The district press release lists contact and administrative details for follow-up: “Nye County School District, 484 S. West Street, Pahrump, NV 89048” and phone numbers 775-727-7743 (Pahrump) and 775-482-5411 (Tonopah). It also lists partners including “Safe Voice, Donors Choose, AmeriCorps Logo, Proud Member of the Chamber of Commerce” and references a “QR Code for NCSD App.” As of the Feb. 20, 2026 release, NCSD’s published position is that AI-enabled eyewear is governed by Board Regulation 7363R, but the district did not publish the regulation’s full language or enforcement details that would clarify medical exemptions, privacy safeguards, or the practical steps schools will take.
