The urgency behind the plan traces partly to an internal directive CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued in late 2025. Altman declared a "code red," pausing non-core projects and redirecting teams to accelerate development in response to mounting competitive pressure, particularly from advances in Google's Gemini models.
