Osula brace lifts Newcastle past West Ham, relegation danger deepens
Osula scored twice as Newcastle raced clear, leaving West Ham 18th and needing Tottenham to lose twice just to keep survival alive.

William Osula’s two-goal burst turned a late-season fixture into a survival crisis for West Ham United, as Newcastle United won 3-1 at St James’ Park and pushed Nuno Espirito Santo’s side to the brink of relegation from the Premier League. West Ham finished the afternoon 18th on 36 points, two behind Tottenham Hotspur in 17th, and with a 13-goal gap against them. Their 14-year stay in the top flight is now under serious threat.
The damage was done early. Newcastle led in the 15th minute when Harvey Barnes seized on a loose pass and crossed for Nick Woltemade to score his first league goal since December. Four minutes later, Osula doubled the advantage, giving West Ham a mountain to climb before the match had even settled. By the time Osula struck again in the 65th minute, Newcastle had already established control and the visitors were running out of time.

West Ham did briefly respond through Taty Castellanos, who pulled one back shortly after Osula’s second, but the comeback never gained momentum. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope produced two important first-half saves to deny Castellanos and Malick Diouf, and West Ham were repeatedly undone by inaccurate passing and wasteful finishing. Newcastle’s intensity and direct running exposed the gaps in a side that needed precision and composure but found neither.
The table leaves West Ham with a narrow and precarious path. They need Tottenham to lose their final two matches and must beat Leeds United at London Stadium next Sunday to have any realistic chance of survival. Tottenham could send West Ham down as early as Tuesday if Spurs beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. If Spurs lose, West Ham still need their own result against Leeds and must then hope Everton win at Tottenham on the final day.
The afternoon also carried emotion for Newcastle. Kieran Trippier made his final home appearance for the club at St James’ Park, a milestone that sat beside Osula’s breakout performance and the wider story of Newcastle’s late-season momentum. For West Ham, it was another warning that collapse has become more likely than rescue.
