Park City, Summit County expect 2034 Olympic planning agreement in a year
Park City and Summit County officials signaled March 6, 2026, they expect to finalize a binding local-government agreement within roughly 12 months to guide early-stage planning for the 2034 Winter Olympics.

Park City and Summit County elected officials and staff signaled on March 6, 2026 that they expect to complete a binding local-government agreement within roughly the next 12 months to define roles and responsibilities for early-stage planning tied to the 2034 Winter Olympics. The agreement is described as a governance framework for planning rather than an operational contract.
Park City Mayor Nann Worel and Summit County Council Chair Malena Stevens plan to travel to Paris in July for the expected awarding of the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City and to observe the opening days and operations of the Summer Olympics in and around the French capital. Officials say the trips will ensure City Hall and the County Courthouse are represented on what will be a momentous day for the community, and that Park City and surrounding Summit County are crucial to the overall concept of a second Games in the state, similar to the role they played during the Winter Olympics in 2002.
Local coordination has already drawn international attention. A delegation from Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in France visited Park City last winter and met at the Utah Olympic Park; Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regional council, was photographed being greeted by Mayor Worel while Summit County Council Chair Malena Stevens and Colin Hilton, president and CEO of the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, were also in attendance. The French delegation visited the Park City area to study staging a Games ahead of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur’s expected awarding of the 2030 Winter Olympics.
The planning-agreement timeline places milestone work over the next year starting from the March 6 signal. Officials and staff are focusing on delineating which local entities will handle early-stage planning tasks, and when decisions and resource commitments will be required as Salt Lake City is positioned to host the 2034 Winter Games if the International Olympic Committee follows expectations at its July meetings in Paris.

Separately, local election turmoil surfaced in the run-up to a recent municipal vote when a text titled “GOP Voting Alert” was sent the day before the Nov. 4 election to Democrats, Republicans and unaffiliated voters within Park City limits. Summit County GOP Chair Ari Ioannides said he did not believe the message came from the county GOP and planned to refer it to authorities, saying, “We believe this message may have been sent by bad actors attempting to mislead voters and manipulate the election by creating the false appearance of Republican involvement.” Local Democratic Chair Rory Swensen said, “Voters deserve transparency, honesty and confidence that everyone is playing by the same rules and upholding election integrity.” The text referenced mayoral candidate Jack Rubin and council candidate Jeremy Rubell; state Democrats had earlier endorsed opponents Ryan Dickey, Tana Toly and Diego Zegarra in a separate outreach.
Election administration work is also underway: the Summit County Clerk’s Office expects to complete a recount on that Monday and describes the process as recounting ballots, reexamining uncounted ballots, conducting logic and accuracy testing of equipment and auditing a percentage of ballots.
Officials say the next 12 months will set the local governance structure for Park City and Summit County’s role in early planning for 2034, and Worel and Stevens’ planned presence in Paris is intended to ensure local representation when an awarding decision is expected.
