Phillies Option Gabriel Rincones to Triple-A, Knee Soreness Clouds Opening Day
Phillies optioned outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as he works through left knee soreness, and it remains unclear if he will be available for Opening Day.

The Philadelphia Phillies optioned outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on March 7, the team announcing the move amid lingering left knee soreness that has kept the 24-year-old out of Grapefruit League action and left his Opening Day status in doubt. RotoWire, citing Paul Casella of MLB.com, reported Rincones is "currently working through a left knee injury" and added that "it's unclear whether he'll be available for the start of the regular season."
The team confirmed the transaction via tweet: "Prior to today’s game, the Phillies optioned RHP Jean Cabrera and OF Gabriel Rincones Jr. to Lehigh Valley (AAA) and optioned RHP Moisés Chace and RHP Yoniel Curet to Reading (AA)." PhillyBaseball.News noted the moves came Saturday morning and that "Four players were all sent out Saturday morning and none of the four were expected to make the team out of spring training, although the early move is a little surprising for a couple of them."
Rincones arrives in Lehigh Valley off a productive 2025 Triple-A season: he slashed .242/.366/.430 with 18 home runs, 73 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 505 plate appearances, according to RotoWire and FantasyPros. Metrophiladelphia highlighted a pronounced platoon split, reporting that "Last season, Rincones Jr. mashed right-handed pitchers, slashing .261/.392/.480 with an .873 OPS, with all 18 of his home runs coming against righties." MiLB footage from April 3, 2025 captures that raw power, captioned "Gabriel Rincones Jr.'s 109.9 mph triple" and identifying him as the Phillies No. 10 prospect.
Multiple outlets tied Rincones' absence from spring games to the knee issue. Metrophiladelphia wrote, "Outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. is also still out of commission, dealing with knee soreness as reported by The Athletic’s Matt Gelb on February 12," and added there has been "no update on the left-handed slugger’s return, which is a tough blow for the 24-year-old, who potentially could have had a chance to make the Opening Day roster as a bat to come off the bench." PhillyBaseball.News said "Rincones, who opened eyes with his power last year in Spring Training, has not played this spring because of a knee injury" and characterized him as "an unlikely candidate to make the team, especially when he suffered the injury."
The roster shuffle included other young pitchers. Jean Cabrera was optioned to Triple-A after two spring outings, with PBN reporting he threw 2.0 innings against Detroit on February 27 and 2.1 innings against Pittsburgh in a later outing, combining for a 2.08 ERA while allowing three hits and one walk and striking out four across 4.1 innings. Yoniel Curet was optioned to Double-A Reading after posting a 43.20 ERA in three spring appearances covering 1.2 innings, allowing two home runs, four walks and four hits; PBN noted Curet was "acquired from Tampa Bay for right-hander Tommy McCollum last December." PBN also reported Moisés Chace is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery "that he underwent last May" and wrote "While he is not in the Phillies plans for this season he is still one of the young pitching prospects that the Phillies believe can help down the road."
For Triple-A depth, Rincones' option puts a high-exit-velocity power bat into Lehigh Valley's lineup while the club waits on medical clarity. As RotoWire and FantasyPros both emphasized, "it's unclear whether he'll be available for the start of the regular season," making Rincones' recovery and his timetable the key developments to watch between the IronPigs and the Phillies in the coming weeks.
