Pistons beat Cavaliers in Game 1, snap 12-game playoff skid
Detroit’s early burst and steady response to Cleveland’s rallies delivered a 111-101 win, ending a 12-game playoff skid against the Cavaliers.
Detroit turned the opener into a statement early, then held off Cleveland’s push for a 111-101 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Little Caesars Arena. The win gave the Pistons a 1-0 series lead and snapped a 12-game playoff losing streak against the Cavaliers, a run that had hung over this matchup for years.
Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 23 points and Tobias Harris added 20 as the Pistons protected home court in a series that opened after both teams survived seven-game first-round battles. Detroit entered at 60-22 and looked sharper from the outset, while Cleveland came in at 52-30 and spent much of the night trying to dig out from the opening minutes.

The decisive swing came in the first quarter, when Detroit outscored Cleveland 37-21 and immediately changed the shape of the series. That start forced the Cavaliers into chase mode, and even a better offensive stretch in the third quarter, when Cleveland scored 30 points, never fully erased the damage. Detroit answered with 24 in that period and then finished with 28 in the fourth to keep the Cavaliers at arm’s length.
The box score told the story of momentum more than drama. Cleveland’s quarter line was 21, 25, 30 and 25. Detroit’s was 37, 22, 24 and 28. That opening burst was the clearest tactical separator, and it mattered because the Pistons did not allow Cleveland to settle into the kind of control that often decides a tight second-round series. Detroit also capitalized on a sloppy Cavaliers performance, turning early mistakes into a cushion it never surrendered.

For the Pistons, the result carries more weight than a single home win. It showed that Detroit can convert an aggressive start into a playoff result against a Cleveland team that had controlled this matchup for a long stretch. For the Cavaliers, the task is now obvious: clean up the start, absorb the opening surge, and force Detroit to play from behind instead of letting the Pistons set the pace. The series now shifts with Detroit in control and Cleveland under pressure.
