Kasey Hui-Ahsam, 41, of Honoka‘a died after an all-terrain vehicle overturned late Saturday on Mud Lane, Hawaiʻi Island police said. The Honda four-wheel ATV was towing a trailer and was traveling north when it lost control, overturned and ejected the sole occupant, who became pinned beneath the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived to find Hui-Ahsam unresponsive. Fire and medical personnel determined he was beyond life-saving measures, and he was pronounced deceased at 12:20 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8. The crash was reported at approximately 11:35 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, about a half mile west of Honoka‘a–Waipi‘o Road.

The East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the single-vehicle collision and has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. At this time, speed, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be factors in this collision, police said.

Investigators are seeking information from anyone who may have observed the ATV, the trailer, or the vehicle’s movements before the crash. "Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to please contact Officer Laurence Davis at (808) 961-2339 or via email at Laurence.Davis@hawaiipolice.gov." Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300. For non-emergency police matters, the Hawaiʻi Police Department Hilo office can be reached at (808) 935-3311.

Hui-Ahsam’s death is the fourth traffic fatality on Hawaiʻi Island in 2026, compared with five at the same point last year, according to Hawaiʻi Island police tallies included in the release. The statistic underscores ongoing concerns about roadway safety across rural roads and agricultural lanes where ATVs and other off-road vehicles mix with local travel.

The crash location on Mud Lane places the collision in the Honoka‘a area, a tight-knit community where loss reverberates quickly. Local leaders and residents often cite limited lighting, narrow lanes, and mixed vehicle use on rural roads as factors that complicate emergency response and increase risk. Authorities will release further details after collision reconstruction and autopsy results are complete.

What comes next for readers: East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit investigators will provide updates as they develop, and the community can assist by contacting Officer Laurence Davis or Crime Stoppers with any relevant information. The pending autopsy and the police inquiry will determine whether any roadway, vehicle or mechanical factors contributed to the loss, and those findings could influence future safety guidance and enforcement in the Honoka‘a area.
