Trump’s attacks on Pope Leo XIV have turned a dispute over Iran into a diplomatic problem for Washington and the Holy See, with Marco Rubio set to travel to Rome and Vatican City this week for meetings that now carry far more weight than a routine stop.

The tension sharpened after Trump said Pope Leo’s comments were helping Iran and making the world “less safe.” In a separate radio interview, Trump said the pope was “endangering” Catholics by criticizing the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Vatican officials have described the public rift as an unprecedented low in relations, and the timing of Rubio’s visit suggests both sides see a need to lower the temperature.

Pope Leo has framed his intervention as a peace appeal, not a political attack. He has repeatedly called for ceasefire, dialogue, and respect for international law in remarks on the Middle East and Iran. Vatican News said Leo warned that stability and peace are not built with “mutual threats” or weapons, but through reasonable, authentic, and responsible dialogue. That message has put the pope at odds with Trump’s approach to the conflict and with the White House’s defense of force.

Rubio has pushed back on the idea that his trip is meant to smooth things over, even as he prepares to meet Pope Leo on May 7. He has said he expects to discuss Cuba and global religious-freedom concerns with the pontiff. He also is scheduled to meet Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, adding another layer to a visit that many observers see as an attempt to thaw tensions between the administration and the Vatican.

The stakes are unusually high because Leo XIV is not just any pope. Born in Chicago, Cardinal Robert Prevost became the first American pope when he was elected the 267th pontiff on May 8, 2025. That makes the clash between Trump and Leo a confrontation between two prominent Americans who now lead rival centers of moral and political authority.

For the Vatican, the fight is not only about one conflict in the Middle East. It is about the credibility of peace diplomacy, the limits of unilateral force, and whether the United States can keep its relationship with the Holy See from becoming another casualty of the war over Iran.
