Prince George's County Libraries Offer Free Cards, Children's and Teen Programs
Prince George’s County residents can get free PGCMLS library cards - virtual cards let you place holds and reserve meeting rooms without visiting a branch.

Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) offers free library cards to county residents and a full slate of children’s and teen programming at its branches, along with community meeting space, public computers and Wi‑Fi. PGCMLS describes itself plainly: “PGCMLS is Fine Free,” a policy leaders say removes financial barriers to borrowing and participation.
County residents who prefer not to visit a branch can register online for a Virtual Library Card. The system’s bilingual prompt reads “Register for a Virtual Library CardObtener una tarjeta de la biblioteca,” and PGCMLS notes that “These virtual library cards expire in three years and can be renewed in person at any branch for an additional three years.” Virtual cardholders can access the Library’s online collections and, without visiting a branch, “place titles on hold or reserve a meeting room,” giving parents and teens remote access to programs and space.
For residents who need computer access immediately, PGCMLS emphasizes that “Library cards are required for public computer access at PGCMLS.” Customers who cannot provide full identification may register for a Computer Access Card by providing only name, zip code and date of birth. The system explains, “With this card, customers can use public computers but will not have borrowing privileges,” and that “Computer Access Only cards can be updated to full-access cards at any branch with proper identification.” The Library’s public services include live homework help for grades 4-12, summer reading programs, story times and author events that rely on both in-branch and online access.
Non-Prince George’s County residents may apply for temporary access: “Non-Prince George's County residents may apply for a temporary card that expires after six months and offer limited benefits.” Both virtual and temporary cards can be upgraded to a physical library card with full borrowing privileges by visiting any PGCMLS branch; the system notes, “Please note that a photo ID and proof of address is required.”
PGCMLS pairs its fine-free stance with accessibility supports. The Library states that “By eliminating overdue fines, the Library’s collections, resources, and services are more accessible for all customers.” Accommodations for individuals with disabilities are available upon request and the Library directs patrons: “Please send us an email using the Account Problems webform or call Public Services at 301-699-3500.”
PGCMLS’s digital offerings include e-books, audiobooks, streaming and research data, supporting telehealth, job searches and school assignments across Prince George’s County. Patrons logging in are reminded to follow site instructions: “Please enter your library card number and password to login. Please remember to log off.”
A note of clarity for readers: some supplied material refers to Prince George Public Library in British Columbia. That separate system says a local card is free for Prince George residents, while those outside the service area may purchase membership for $120 per year or $10 per month for temporary residents, and posted that “Both branches of PGPL will be CLOSED on Monday, February 16th. Regular hours resume on Tuesday, February 17th at 10:00 am. We appreciate your understanding.” For PGCMLS help, contact Public Services at 301-699-3500 or visit any county branch to upgrade or manage your account.
