Projected 2026 NCAA baseball field of 64 takes shape before selection day

NC State, East Carolina, Kentucky and Michigan were the four teams hanging on the razor’s edge in D1Baseball’s final projection, while Troy, Texas State, Kent State and South Alabama slipped into the First Four Out and the bracket’s fault lines came into focus. The NCAA’s selection committee now ranks the top 32 teams for bracket purposes, a shift that makes seed placement more consequential than it used to be. Teams ranked 29 through 32 are slotted into the national-seed positions from No. 1 through No. 4, seeds 25 through 28 go into the 5 through 8 range, seeds 21 through 24 land in the 9 through 12 range, and teams 17 through 20 become two-seeds in the 13 through 16 regionals. Geography still matters, and the committee cannot place two teams from the same conference in the same regional, which can reshape the bracket even after the field is set.

D1Baseball’s May 18 projection, compiled by Mark Etheridge, Kendall Rogers and Aaron Fitt, had the SEC leading the way with 12 projected bids, followed by the ACC with nine, the Big 12 with seven, the Big Ten with five, Conference USA with three, the Sun Belt with three and the American with two. That distribution underscored the value of conference strength in a year when bubble teams needed not just wins, but wins that would survive comparison against deeper leagues and stronger schedules.

The automatic-bid race closed Sunday, May 24, after conference tournaments began May 9. The selection show was scheduled for Monday, May 25 at noon ET on ESPN2, and the 64-team tournament was set to begin Friday, May 29 at 16 regional sites. The road then runs through super regionals and into the Men’s College World Series, which begins Friday, June 12 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Nebraska.

The postseason also arrived with LSU defending the national title after sweeping Coastal Carolina in the 2025 championship series.
