Rio Rancho seeks bounce-back against Farmington Friday for District 1-5A title
Farmington hosted Rio Rancho at Scorpion Arena as Rio Rancho sought a bounce-back after a 74-61 loss earlier this month; the 6 p.m. Friday winner would claim the District 1-5A trophy and state seeding.
Farmington hosted Rio Rancho at Scorpion Arena Friday night in the District 1-5A girls basketball championship, a 6 p.m. matchup that offered the winner both a trophy and seeding for the state tournament. Farmington entered the game 23-3 overall and leaned on a strong home-court advantage at Scorpion Arena, while Rio Rancho arrived 23-4 overall after a 58-52 third-round win over Volcano Vista that advanced the Rams to the finals.
The season series stood at 1-1 heading into the title game after Farmington handed Rio Rancho a 74-61 defeat earlier this month at Scorpion Arena. Rio Rancho’s record included two road losses this season, one of which was that 74-61 setback to Farmington, and the Rams sought a bounce-back in the district rematch to secure a better seed for the upcoming state tournament.
Farmington’s momentum was reflected in its Class 5A MaxPreps positioning, where the Scorpions were listed just a few percentage points behind Hobbs in the latest rankings and had split two meetings with the Eagles this season. Coach Adair highlighted team cohesion and the emergence of senior Carly Conley as keys to Farmington’s surge: “These girls have all learned to accept the role they have on the team and to work together and not let the outside things get in the way,” Adair said. “The experience these girls have working and playing together has gone a long way.” Adair added that “(Conley) really had her biggest breakthrough at the Hobbs Tournament,” and that Conley “averaged double digits in scoring for the tournament and she’s going to play a very important role for us these next couple weeks.” Conley is Farmington’s second-leading rebounder and fourth-leading scorer.

Rio Rancho, identified as the Rams in the game preview, leaned on the momentum from the 58-52 win over Volcano Vista to try to flip the result from their earlier loss at Scorpion Arena. The district championship block listed the night’s girls basketball finals as: District 1-5A, Rio Rancho at Farmington, 6 p.m.; District 1-4A, Gallup at Kirtland Central, 6 p.m.; and District 1-3A, Tohatchi vs. Navajo Prep at Shiprock HS, 6 p.m.
Beyond basketball, local postseason activity included the Storm girls wrestling program, which took first place at the district 5A-1 Duals with standout performances from Ashley Smith, Jianna Coon, Alexis Birner and Briseis St. John. Coach Borrego said of his squad’s mindset, “I feel like the team is excited. There is no pressure. They are out here having fun and making the most of their opportunities. Most of these young ladies train year-round and I think they’re excited to go out and compete and put their hard work on display. We are in the right place to do big things, but we still need to show up and perform.” State tournament brackets for girls basketball were set to be revealed on March 2, with district outcomes from Scorpion Arena shaping seeding for the field.
