Rivian delivered 10,365 electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2026, a roughly 20% gain over the 8,640 it delivered in the same period last year, and produced 10,236 units at its Normal, Illinois manufacturing plant. The numbers land against a notably difficult backdrop: the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired in September 2025, consumer hesitation has spread across the broader EV category, and Rivian's own 2025 volumes, at 42,247 for the full year, came in 18% below 2024.

What makes the Q1 figure striking is its quality as much as its size. A year ago, Rivian's production and delivery numbers were badly misaligned: the factory churned out 14,611 vehicles while only 8,640 reached customers, a deliberate inventory build before the disruptive retooling needed to prepare for the R2. Now production and deliveries are nearly in lockstep, 10,236 built against 10,365 delivered, a sign that operational discipline at the Normal plant has improved materially.

The company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 delivery guidance of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles. Hitting that range would represent a 47% to 58% jump over 2025 totals, and the math makes clear where that growth must come from. With R1T, R1S, and commercial van volumes expected to hold roughly flat at around 42,000 units, CFO Claire McDonough's guidance implies the R2 midsize SUV must drive an incremental 20,000 to 25,000 deliveries before December.

The R2, formally unveiled on March 12, begins production in Q2 at Normal. The R2 Performance trim, priced at $57,990, is scheduled for late spring delivery, while the broader lineup targets a base price around $45,000, putting Rivian in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E for the first time. A second factory in Georgia is under development to support longer-term volume beyond what Normal can handle alone.

Capital expenditures for 2026 are projected between $1.95 billion and $2.05 billion, nearly double 2025 levels, reflecting the simultaneous cost of scaling the R2 and developing in-house autonomous driving features. Rivian recorded its first full year of positive gross profit in 2025, generating $144 million, but free cash flow remains deeply negative, with Q4 2025 alone registering a $1.144 billion outflow. The runway to the R2's commercial ramp is finite.

Two strategic partnerships are helping to widen that runway. Rivian's joint technology venture with Volkswagen Group cleared a winter-testing milestone in the first quarter, triggering an additional $1 billion tranche from the German automaker. Separately, Uber announced an investment of up to $1 billion tied to Rivian's platform, broadening its commercial demand base well beyond Amazon's delivery van fleet.

Full first-quarter financial results, including updated revenue and margin data, are scheduled for an earnings webcast on April 30.
