Rochester Americans reconnect past and present honoring 1996 Calder Cup champions
Dixon Ward, Wayne Primeau and Jody Gage returned to Blue Cross Arena as the Amerks wore the patriotic 1996 throwback jerseys and hosted a meet-and-greet with photo ops beside the Calder Cup.

Dixon Ward, Wayne Primeau and Jody Gage walked into the Blue Cross Arena Friday, Feb. 20, 2026, for the Amerks’ ’90s night as the team donned its stars-and-stripes throwback jersey and opened a pregame meet-and-greet that included photos with both the current and vintage Calder Cup. The Americans wore the fifth of six specialty throwback jerseys this season - alternating red and white vertical stripes with “Americans” over a large centered R and six white stars on blue shoulders to represent the franchise’s six Calder Cup championships - in a home game against Laval.
Ward used the return to Rochester to revisit the 1996 run that still defines his career. “Driving back into town, the city’s a lot bigger than I remember,” he said, adding that he “hasn’t been back since the day after the parade ended.” Ward led the Amerks in assists in 1995-96 with 56 and finished the regular season with 94 points, one behind Craig Charron for the team lead. In the playoffs he finished with 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points in 19 games and received the Jack Butterfield Trophy as playoff MVP.
The evening also highlighted franchise legend Jody Gage, who was on hand to celebrate what became his third Calder Cup in 1996 and the culmination of an 11-year run in Rochester. Gage retired following the 1996 season as the Amerks’ all-time leader in goals, assists, points and games played, is one of only three players to reach 500 AHL goals and 1,000 AHL points, and logged 17 AHL seasons - a mark that ties him for third in league history. Gage remains a member of the Amerks Hall of Fame and the AHL Hall of Fame and is among the three former players to have his number retired by Rochester.
Wayne Primeau returned in the same stars-and-stripes sweaters that launched his pro career; Primeau “launched his 13-year pro career that spring in the stars and stripes sweaters,” a reminder that several NHL careers trace back to that 1995-96 Amerks crew. Ward rattled off the contributors who made that team click, naming Brian Holzinger, Barrie Moore, Steve Shields, Scott Metcalfe, Dan Frawley and Scott Nichol as part of a depth chart built on complementary skills and character. Coach John Tortorella led the roster that included Curtis Brown, Craig Charron, Jason Cirone, Rob Conn, Steve Shields, Steve Junker and others who combined to reach the June 13, 1996 Game 7 win over the Portland Pirates, a 2-1 finale that remains the franchise’s most recent Calder Cup.

The Amerks’ event programming mirrored the franchise’s broader anniversary work. The meet-and-greet began at 6:00 p.m., the team promoted photo opportunities with both versions of the Cup, and team materials noted the patriotic jerseys had last been worn on opening night of 2009-10 before returning for this season. Ward, now a partner in the Okanagan Hockey Group, called the Calder Cup victory “still the most exciting time I’ve had in my career,” and said “I loved my time in Rochester,” emphasizing the personal thread between that 1996 championship and the present.
Framed by the AHL’s 90th season and Rochester’s 70th anniversary campaign, the throwback night stitched together tangible artifacts - the jerseys, the Cup, former players - with the current roster’s season, underscoring how a single Game 7 and a handful of names continue to shape the Amerks’ identity three decades later.
