Roger Daugherty Arrested After Fatal Burglary Shooting of 72-Year-Old Man
A 72-year-old Prairie Township man was fatally shot during an alleged targeted burglary; suspect Roger Daugherty was arrested driving the victim’s stolen car and charged, raising community safety concerns.

A 72-year-old man identified in reports as Harold Everette Moore, also referred to as Harold Moore, was found dead inside his Prairie Township home after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies responding to a report of a deceased person about 10:40 p.m. Sunday located the victim at a residence in the 200 block of Postle Boulevard and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office developed a case that they describe as targeted rather than random. The sheriff’s office said, “the crime was determined to be targeted and not a random event.” Court records and arrest documents allege that 44-year-old Roger Daugherty entered the home with the intent to commit burglary, shot Moore, and stole property including a 2009 Toyota Corolla.
Police located Daugherty the following day driving the stolen 2009 Toyota Corolla on West Broad Street and took him into custody. Municipal court documents state that during an interview with detectives Daugherty admitted to shooting the victim, stealing property and discarding the firearm into the Scioto River. Authorities have not released details on recovery of the weapon or additional physical evidence.
Daugherty faces charges of murder, aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence. He appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court Tuesday morning and bond was set at $1.5 million. A judge ordered conditions that include staying away from drugs, alcohol and weapons, and avoiding the victim’s family and the location where the shooting occurred. Daugherty’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 19.
For neighbors and those following the case, the facts carry practical implications. A purported targeted burglary that resulted in a fatal shooting underscores the importance of basic security measures and community vigilance. Residents should check locks and lighting, review any home surveillance footage for the Sunday evening timeframe, and report suspicious vehicles or activity to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to assist investigators. Municipal court records and sheriff’s office statements are central to the case record; officials may release further details as detectives pursue leads, search for the firearm and process evidence.
The criminal process will play out in Franklin County, and prosecutors may refine charges as evidence is developed. Expect updates from the sheriff’s office and municipal court as investigators seek to corroborate Daugherty’s statements and determine motive. For now, the community must reckon with a violent break-in that left a 72-year-old man dead and a neighborhood seeking answers and reassurance.
