Romantic Warrior Dominates, Defends Hong Kong Gold Cup, Reaches 13 Group Ones
Romantic Warrior romped home by four lengths in the HK$13m Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup at Sha Tin, repeating his 2024 win and pushing his Group 1 tally to a reported 13.

Romantic Warrior, the eight-year-old Acclamation gelding trained in Hong Kong by Danny Shum and ridden by James McDonald, demolished a five-strong field to win the HK$13,000,000 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin on March 1 by four lengths in an official time of 1:59.77. The victory was described across reports as authoritative and repeated his 2024 Gold Cup success.
Breaking from barrier four, Romantic Warrior settled third behind early leader Beauty Joy before McDonald angled him out in the straight and produced a decisive surge that left his rivals trailing; race reports noted a hands-and-heels ride as he cruised clear. The field of six all carried 126 lb, and the TDN race block lists the winner’s prize as HK$7,280,000.
John Size’s Ensued, ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, held for second, four lengths behind the winner and 1 1/4 lengths clear of Winning Wing, ridden by Dylan Mo, who closed strongly to take third. Dylan Mo said of his mount, “It was a good run; it’s a Group 1 race, and everything tested the horses.” Hugh Bowman, aboard My Wish, added, “He was courageous, and while stamina was tested, the speed was evident.”

Connections and bloodstock details underline Romantic Warrior’s elite status. Foaled March 18, 2018 at Corduff Stud in County Kildare, Ireland, he was a 300,000 guineas yearling at Tattersalls in 2019 and later listed at HK$4,800,000 HRA ’21 HKIS. Owner Peter Lau Pak Fai and trainer Danny Shum celebrated a horse whose TDN lifetime line records a 29: 22-5-0 career with earnings shown as $32,425,252 and multiple Hong Kong honors cited. The pedigree block lists him as by Acclamation out of Folk Melody, bred by Corduff Stud and T J Rooney.
Danny Shum, 65, stressed fitness and versatility when outlining immediate plans, saying, “It’s a small field, but he’s very fit. The 2000 metres suits him perfectly, and while he can handle 2400m, we’ll see about overseas contenders in May. He’s got tremendous potential.” Shum also mapped a path through the QEII Cup and the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup, with the latter scheduled for May 24 and carrying the final leg of Hong Kong’s Triple Crown.

Romantic Warrior’s Gold Cup success also thrust the Triple Crown narrative back into focus: he won the Stewards’ Cup (G1, 1600m) on his previous start, and Thoroughbreddailynews noted he is “now just a leg away” from becoming only the third horse to complete Hong Kong’s Triple Crown. Multiple reports state the win extended his Group 1 haul to 13; if confirmed by official statistics, that total would be the most by a Hong Kong-trained horse and cement his place alongside dual Gold Cup winners Viva Pataca, Military Attack, Designs On Rome, Time Warp and Golden Sixty as one of the territory’s modern greats.
