Rondale Moore, 25, found dead in New Albany garage; death under investigation
Former Purdue standout and NFL receiver Rondale Moore was found dead in his hometown; police say the wound appears self-inflicted and an autopsy is scheduled.

Rondale Moore, the 25-year-old former Purdue standout and National Football League wide receiver, was found dead Saturday in a garage at a private residence in New Albany, Indiana, New Albany police said. Investigators said the death is believed to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and remains under investigation.
New Albany Police Chief Todd Bailey told reporters Moore was discovered in the 1600 block of Ekin Avenue. Floyd County Coroner Matthew Tomlin confirmed Moore’s death and said an autopsy had been scheduled for Sunday to determine the official cause and manner.
Moore's death drew immediate statements from his most recent team and the league. The Minnesota Vikings said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rondale Moore. While we are working to understand the facts, we have spoken with Rondale's family to offer our condolences and the full support of the Minnesota Vikings. We have also been in communication with our players, coaches, and staff, and will make counseling and emotional support resources available to anyone in need. Our thoughts are with Rondale's family and friends during this devastating time.” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell added, “I am devastated by the news of Rondale's death. While Rondale had been a member of the Vikings for a short time, he was someone we came to know well and care about deeply. He was a humble, soft-spoken, and respectful young man who was proud of his Indiana roots. As a player, he was disciplined, dedicated and resilient despite facing adversity multiple times as injuries sidelined him throughout his career.” The NFL said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Rondale Moore” and extended condolences to his family, friends and teammates.
Moore rose to national attention at Purdue, where he won the Paul Hornung Award as college football’s most versatile player and was an All-American. He was the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in high school and starred locally at New Albany before transferring to Trinity High School, where he helped his team to a state football title.
The Cardinals selected Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons in Arizona before being traded to the Atlanta Falcons in March 2024. Moore dislocated his right knee in Falcons training camp and missed the 2024 season. He signed a one-year deal with the Vikings in March 2025 but suffered a season-ending left knee injury while returning a punt in the preseason opener on Aug. 9, 2025. Team accounts from that moment said he was so distraught after realizing the seriousness of the injury that he slammed his hand down on a cart, a reaction audible throughout the stadium. Those consecutive, career-threatening injuries kept Moore off the field for two straight seasons.
Authorities said no additional details would be released while the investigation continues. Police asked that anyone with information contact the New Albany Police Department.
