Roseburg Opens $2.5M Stewart Park with Eight Tennis and Ten Pickleball Courts

Roseburg celebrates a $2.5 million renovation at Stewart Park with a ribbon-cutting scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, delivering eight renovated tennis courts and 10 newly dedicated pickleball courts next to the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center at 1201 NW Stewart Parkway.

The upgrade replaces courts that were more than half a century old and adds upgraded fencing, new lighting, additional seating, a new entryway and an enhanced security system. Players are asked to bring their own rackets and balls, and organizers say courts will support junior tennis, adult tennis and pickleball clinics and competitive play for all levels.

Funding for the project is listed as a $750,000 state grant secured by Roseburg Parks and Recreation Program Manager Val Ligon, $523,000 in City of Roseburg funds and $1.1 million in matching community contributions raised by the nonprofit Umpqua Valley Tennis Center, with the project described as a $2.5 million renovation. The three named contributions total $2,373,000, leaving about $127,000 not itemized in the published breakdown.

Daily usage and membership details are set: adults will continue to pay $2 to use the courts while youths aged 18 and under always play for free. UVTC is offering a new month-to-month outdoor-courts membership for non-members priced at $25 for adults and $45 for households with no annual commitment. Officials note classes and tournament information is available through the UVTC program listings.

Val Ligon warned of high demand and the need to manage court time: “We’re anticipating it will be so busy that a schedule will need to be put into place.” She added, “There’s a lot of excitement about the new courts, and people want to get out there and play.” City of Roseburg officials, UVTC staff and local community members are expected to attend the ribbon-cutting.

The Stewart Park project also reconfigures surrounding park assets: the existing pro shop is removed and replaced with a new facility, basketball courts and a shelter adjacent to the Tennis Center are removed for additional parking, half basketball courts east of the YMCA are expanded to full courts and Fir Grove fields are converted to a six-field soccer facility. The concession and restroom building remains central to the complex, and a larger undeveloped area north of the Tennis Center awaits any future realignment of Stewart Parkway as shown on the city site plan.

Officials expect strong community interest once the facility opens and say scheduling and program sign-ups will follow as demand dictates.
