Gunfire outside one of Washington’s most closely watched political gatherings left a Secret Service agent hit by at least one round, though the agent was protected by a bulletproof vest and expected to be OK. The shooting forced the evacuation of President Donald Trump, the first lady and other officials from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, and the event was canceled.

Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California. Officials said Allen was apprehended at the scene. Later reporting said Allen was hospitalized and in custody after the incident, deepening concern over how an armed suspect got close enough to trigger a lockdown at a dinner tied to the White House and the press corps.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner has long been a political-media fixture. The White House Correspondents’ Association was founded on Feb. 25, 1914, the dinner began in the early 1920s, and Calvin Coolidge became the first president to attend in 1924. Trump’s appearance marked his first time attending the dinner as president, turning the annual event into an especially sensitive security target.

After his arrest, Allen allegedly told law enforcement that he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials, according to two sources. That allegation, if borne out, would point to a political motive rather than an indiscriminate attack, and it raises fresh questions about threat detection at high-profile federal and media events in the nation’s capital.

AP and other reports described Allen as a California teacher and video game developer. Separate reporting based on a LinkedIn profile matching his name described him as a mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, an independent game developer and a part-time teacher. That profile said a person with his name earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Caltech in 2017 and a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills in 2025.

The shooting landed at the intersection of public safety, political symbolism and press freedom. A dinner meant to stage the uneasy relationship between presidents and journalists was instead transformed into a security response, with armed officers, evacuation procedures and a wounded agent underscoring how vulnerable even heavily protected events can be when a suspect arrives with a firearm and a stated intent to target national leaders.
