Six Wayne and Holmes County girls basketball programs captured district championships Saturday, Feb. 28, as Norwayne, Smithville, Chippewa, Waynedale, Triway and West Holmes all won postseason finals while Dalton and Wooster fell in their title games.

The full slate of district-final scores shows the breadth of the local sweep: Norwayne 65, Mentor Lake Catholic 37; Chippewa 52, Poland Seminary 41; Smithville 43, Rootstown 38; Waynedale 56, Salineville Southern 38; Triway 54, Keystone 40; West Holmes 49, Carrollton 45. Two area squads finished as runners-up: Richmond Heights 48, Dalton 37, and Twinsburg 67, Wooster 34.

Four of the district winners are WCAL programs — Norwayne, Smithville, Waynedale and Chippewa — a strong showing for the county’s primary league. Seed information underscores some of the upsets and runs: Norwayne entered as the No. 2 seed, Chippewa as the No. 5 seed, Waynedale as the No. 7 seed and Smithville as the No. 13 seed, highlighting deep postseason performance from lower-ranked teams.

Division designations clarified several title games: Waynedale’s 56-38 victory over Salineville Southern earned the Waynedale girls a Division VI district crown, while West Holmes’ 49-45 win over Carrollton secured a Division IV district title. Wooster’s 67-34 loss to Twinsburg left the Warriors as Division II district runners-up.

Smithville coach Eric Nickles put the local results in broader perspective: “It just shows how many good basketball players and coaches are in the league,” said Smithies coach Eric Nickles. “I think we take it for granted sometimes, but when you look around the area, there is a lot of good basketball being played around here and in Holmes County. I am just proud of our league, how competitive it was all year, and it is showing with tournament wins.”

Individual honors accompanied the team results in District 4 selections. Ava Maibach and Leah Keib were named Players of the Year as Norwayne and Smithville led the list of all-district honorees, reflecting standout seasons for those programs in the run to district titles.

Saturday’s results leave a broad cross-section of Wayne and Holmes County programs with hardware and postseason momentum — Norwayne (65-37), Smithville (43-38), Chippewa (52-41), Waynedale (56-38), Triway (54-40) and West Holmes (49-45) — and two close losses for Dalton and Wooster that nonetheless capped deep tournament runs. The outcomes mark a significant moment for county girls basketball, with multiple divisions represented among the champions.
