Son & Water Release Te Reo Māori Reggae Single Nau Mai
Son & Water, a Hamilton-based father-and-son reggae duo, released their first te reo Māori single "Nau Mai" on 6 March 2026, opening with the line “Nau mai rā ngā manuhiri e, mauria mai tō koutou aroha.”

Son & Water released "Nau Mai" on 6 March 2026, marking the Hamilton-based father-and-son duo’s first single sung in te reo Māori and pushing their soulful reggae sound into a cultural welcome. The track opens with the line “Nau mai rā ngā manuhiri e, mauria mai tō koutou aroha – Welcome visitors, bring your love,” which frames the song as an invitation as much as a tune.
Scoop’s feature on the release described the single as a “uniting call,” noting it blends te reo Māori with the band’s unique, soulful reggae sound and “promotes a powerful message of kōtahitanga, aroha and belonging, welcoming manuhiri into Son & Water’s world, space and whānau.” That language sets the song’s intent plainly: the lyrics and arrangement are positioned to be both a dance track and a cultural greeting.
Mātanga reo Te Kiwa Goddard provided guidance and translation for the project and framed the work in marae practice. Goddard, who affiliates to Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Maniapoto, described the collaboration as a “privilege” and underlined the practical cultural bridge the single aims to provide: “Raised on the marae myself I understand how important it is to have the ability to welcome people onto your marae. If you have a basic understanding of your pepeha and can utter a simple welcoming mihi, this will allow your people the opportunity to welcome people onto your marae and receive your manaakitanga (hospitality).”
Songwriting support came from Son & Water’s bass player Terry Apiata, credited on the single and identified with iwi affiliations Ngāti Awa and Tūhoe. Scoop’s coverage also noted the familial configuration of the act as a father-and-son duo; beyond Apiata’s songwriting support, the band’s members’ full names were not listed in the release material.
The single was distributed with promotional materials via Scoop and is listed on Apple Music as “Nau Mai - Single — 2026.” Son & Water’s artist page on Apple Music shows a short discography that now includes Nau Mai alongside other recent releases: SAW (Single, 2026), Missed Your Chance (Te Reo Version, 2025), Home (feat. Myshaan, 2025), Loyal (2025), Just An Illusion (2025) and Lost (2025). The band also maintains an official YouTube channel that hosts te reo material such as “Missed Your Chance (Te Reo Version),” though the release notes do not specify whether an official music video for Nau Mai appears there.
Nau Mai arrives amid a small but visible thread in Aotearoa reggae of artists integrating te reo into roots and contemporary reggae - a context reflected in earlier regional releases like Nikau Te Huki’s Casual Healing project and the December 2024 waiata “Water the Good Seed,” which Te Huki described as “a mantra to banish bad habits and serve as an uplifting reminder to practice the simple habits that keep us smiling and untroubled.”
With the single now available on streaming services and promoted through Scoop’s Art & Entertainment coverage, Son & Water have put te reo Māori at the centre of their 2026 output, positioning Nau Mai as both a musical step and a deliberate cultural welcome from their Hamilton base.
