Spy Thriller Sequel Dhurandhar Sells Out Cinemas, Revives Bollywood Box Office
Dhurandhar: The Revenge crossed Rs 844 crore worldwide in its first week, setting the biggest Hindi-film opening in history and running near-24/7 in cinemas across India.

Ranveer Singh's swaggering spy walked back into Indian cinemas on March 19, and the crowds followed in numbers that Bollywood had not seen in years. Dhurandhar: The Revenge delivered an unprecedented opening weekend, grossing $82.4 million worldwide. The Aditya Dhar-directed spy-action sequel recorded the highest opening weekend ever for a Hindi-language film worldwide, driven by extraordinary advance bookings and sold-out shows across circuits.
The release arrived just over three months after the original lit up screens. Dhurandhar was released on December 5, 2025. By the end of that year, the spy thriller had grossed about $155 million worldwide, ranking among Hindi-language cinema's biggest hits. Its momentum fed directly into multiplex finances: in February, India's largest multiplex operator PVR Inox reported footfalls rose nearly 9% year-on-year in the quarter to December, powered by Dhurandhar, whose record run helped lift the chain's overall box-office collections 13% in the prior year.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge was released in theatres worldwide on March 19, 2026, coinciding with Gudi Padwa, Ugadi, and Eid. Written, directed and produced by Aditya Dhar, with Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar also producing, the film released in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Those five languages accounted for more than 1.5 million advance tickets sold before a single reel had run, early proof of a frenzy few films command.
The film stars Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, Danish Pandor, and Manav Gohil, with several actors reprising their roles from the first part. It follows an undercover Indian intelligence agent who continues to infiltrate Karachi's criminal syndicates and Pakistani politics while avenging the 26/11 attacks and confronting bigger threats. The original three-hour-34-minute film earned praise for its pace while fuelling a debate over its politics; the sequel's runtime listed on ticketing platforms is 3 hours 55 minutes, which is almost four hours.

The exhibition figures behind the opening are striking. More than 12.64 lakh tickets were booked across India, spread over 26,761 shows, and many multiplexes in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad added midnight and 24-hour screenings to meet the growing demand. Cineplexes across India packed in up to three dozen near round-the-clock shows daily, running from early mornings to late nights.
Dhurandhar: The Revenge opened impressively on March 19, raking in Rs 102.55 crore on its first day in India. By day five, the film had collected Rs 519.12 crore net in India across all languages, and its opening week placed it at the top of the all-time Hindi opening week chart, ahead of Pushpa 2's Rs 425.10 crore and Pathaan's Rs 351 crore.
Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh put it plainly: "The sequel is creating history. It is shattering all previous records and redefining the box office. A true game changer."

While Allu Arjun's Telugu-language Pushpa 2: The Rule holds the overall Indian film opening weekend record at $92.5 million, Dhurandhar: The Revenge set the benchmark specifically for Hindi-language cinema. In North America, the film collected $10 million over the opening weekend and $14 million for the extended five-day launch, setting a new benchmark for Hindi-language releases.
Like its predecessor, the film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its performances and storytelling, but criticism for its alleged nationalist propaganda. It was also banned in several Gulf Cooperation Council countries. That controversy, however, did little to cool audience enthusiasm at home. Trade observers are now expecting Dhurandhar: The Revenge to become the first film ever to enter the 1,000 crore net club in a single language in India. For a Hindi film industry that spent much of the past few years watching streaming siphon audiences away from seats, those numbers represent more than a sequel's success.
