Mark Callahan, 53, of Mount Sinai, was indicted after prosecutors say he drove up to a woman in a shopping center parking lot, seized her pocketbook and dragged her as he sped away, then led officers on a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash in Farmingville and an alleged self-inflicted stabbing. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced the indictment March 5.

The indictment includes second-degree robbery, identified by prosecutors as the top count and a Class C violent felony, and third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle. Patch reported Callahan faces up to 15 years in prison on the robbery charge and that a court ordered him held on $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond, or $2,500,000 partially secured bond while the case is pending. Callahan was arraigned in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead, with several outlets reporting the arraignment occurred Wednesday, March 4. Patch contacted defense counsel Kathleen Gearrity of the Legal Aid Society, which the Patch report noted typically does not comment on pending cases.

News accounts describe a Feb. 18 incident at about 1 p.m. in a shopping center parking lot near Nesconset Highway, where the victim was reportedly walking from her car toward a nail salon. Daily Voice and other reports say Callahan allegedly climbed from a black Chevrolet Suburban, grabbed the strap of the woman’s pocketbook, re-entered the vehicle while still holding the purse and drove off, dragging the victim across the lot. An Instagram post identified the victim as a 64-year-old woman; other outlets did not provide an age.

Suffolk prosecutors say officers pursued Callahan at speeds reportedly exceeding 90 mph before his vehicle crashed through a snow embankment into a parking lot in Farmingville and struck another vehicle. Multiple outlets report that when officers approached after the crash, Callahan allegedly brandished a knife and stabbed himself 11 times in the abdomen. The indictment and DA announcement frame these actions as part of the sequence leading to his arrest.

Tierney framed the prosecution in quality-of-life terms, saying prosecutors “will not tolerate violent acts that threaten the safety and security of our residents.” He added, “What began as an attempted purse theft escalated into a terrifying ordeal for this victim,” and “Protecting the quality of life in Suffolk means holding offenders accountable and ensuring that our community remains a place where families can shop, work, and live without fear.”

Local reports differ on the exact storefront cited for the initial snatching, with some accounts naming the T.J. Maxx parking lot and others describing a shopping center near Nesconset Highway or using Port Jefferson in headline copy. Prosecutors have filed the indictment and the case remains pending in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead; Callahan remains held on the bond conditions reported by Patch as the charges move forward.
