Sugarcreek council discusses future plans after fire station ceiling tiles fell
Ceiling tiles fell inside the Sugarcreek fire station, prompting Mayor Walt Wilson to pause living-quarters construction and order inspections after fire personnel reported concerns.

Ceiling tiles fell inside the Sugarcreek fire station, and Mayor Walt Wilson told village council that “Some ceiling tiles came down in the fire station, and fire personnel were concerned about further damage,” prompting officials to halt an in-progress construction project until engineers assess the building.
At the March 2 village council meeting, Medical Director Dr. Kevin Miller told council that the damage and personnel worries warrant broader thinking about the site, saying, “I think it is time to think about a new building.” Council members heard that the incident was serious enough to pause the planned living quarters at the station while the village seeks professional evaluations.
Village Administrator Kevin Kaser outlined the next administrative steps to council. Kevin Kaser will contact a structural engineer to inspect the building, and he has contacted MEB to give a report on the condition of the roof. Council was told both evaluations will inform any move beyond temporary repairs.
Council members stressed operational safety and procedural review. The construction of living quarters has been placed on hold pending the results of the inspections, and the mayor and council agreed the fire station building must be safe before work resumes or before the village commits to further capital decisions. The meeting record contains no timeline for when the structural engineer or the MEB roof report will be completed.
Fire personnel were described at the meeting as concerned about possible further damage, but no fire department chief or individual firefighter was quoted by name. Officials limited remarks to the inspection process and to ensuring that any future choices, including replacement or substantial repair, follow professional recommendations: the two reports will be presented to council prior to any decision being made.
The council discussion did not include cost estimates, contractor names for the paused living-quarters work, or a scheduled date for the inspections. Those details remain outstanding and were not available at the March 2 meeting record as presented to council.
Local obituary notices that appeared alongside the village report listed recent deaths in the area: Jason L. Ronald Dean Miller [...] Village Administrator Kevin Kaser will contact a structural engineer to inspect the building.
Council deferred any final action until it has the structural engineer’s inspection and MEB’s roof condition report to review.
