Basin Recreation, the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District, is moving forward with a major redesign of the Trailside skate area into a modern, inclusive Trailside Wheels Park that serves skateboards, scooters, BMX bikes, inline skates and adaptive wheeled recreation users. Park Record described the project as “almost $2 million,” while District Director Rob Parrish estimated the overall cost to be “around $1.8 million.” The plan calls for replacing aging prefabricated features with a durable, fully integrated concrete facility and expanding the park footprint by roughly 25% to 50%, depending on the final design.

The District has selected Spohn Ranch to lead a collaborative design/build process that Basin Recreation says will “blend public input with professional design experience to create a wheels park that feels authentic, functional, and built for the people who will use it most.” Phase 1 - Design Development - is scheduled to kick off in March 2026 and will include three design meetings. Basin Recreation listed Design Workshop #1 for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Trailside Park Room, 5715 Trailside Drive, Park City, UT.

Basin Recreation and Park Record both say the District is funding the project through its capital budget and impact fees; Basin Recreation’s materials specify the work is included in the approved 2026 capital budget and note staff are also seeking grant funding. Moody’s Ratings affirmed Summit County’s Aa1 issuer rating and confirmed an Aa1 rating on general obligation debt issued by the Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District on Feb. 17, 2026, a fiscal backdrop the District highlights as part of its financial context for capital projects.

Accessibility is a stated priority. Basin Recreation’s program language explains the renovation will be “designed for long-term performance, safety, and inclusivity,” and Parrish framed the work as part of Basin Recreation’s broader mission: “Within our own mission, vision and guiding principles for Basin Recreation, we’re trying to make things more accessible and more inclusive for people of all ages and abilities.” Basin Recreation points to prior accessibility work, including an all-abilities playground opened at Willow Creek Park in October 2023, as precedent for the district’s inclusive goals.

Public input will shape feature choices such as street versus transition elements, flow, and beginner features; Basin Recreation invites all ages and experience levels to participate and reassures residents that “No technical expertise is required—just your perspective. All ages are welcome.” Parrish urged community representation, saying, “Come and represent yourself and other members of the community who would use it so we can really make this an inclusive and universally accessible recreation feature for the community.”

After the design workshops, Basin Recreation will present the final design to the Administrative Control Board for approval, with Phase 2 listed as Construction Documents.
