Sunland Park Boosts 2026 Stakes Purses $310,000, Commits Minimum 10-Race Cards
Sunland Park added $310,000 to its 2026 stakes purses and will run a guaranteed 10-race card daily beginning March 6, expanding opportunities through the meet’s April 5 finale.

Owners and trainers at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino stand to gain immediately after the track announced a $310,000 boost to stakes purses and a commitment to card at least 10 races per day, the track reported March 2, 2026. Sunland Park’s news release says, “The expanded 10-race minimum schedule ensures more opportunities for owners and trainers to compete for the enriched prize money during the final month of the season.”
The purse increases lift seven stakes: Casa Ford Sunland Stakes to $250,000 from $200,000 (+$50,000); Mine That Bird Derby to $175,000 from $125,000 (+$50,000); New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks to $175,000 from $130,000 (+$45,000); New Mexico Breeders’ Derby to $175,000 from $130,000 (+$45,000); New Mexico State University Stakes to $100,000 from $80,000 (+$20,000); NM Spring Fling to $100,000 from $50,000 (+$50,000); and West Texas Juvenile consolation to $100,000 from $50,000 (+$50,000).
Sunland Park will begin the 10-race minimum schedule on Friday, March 6, 2026, and maintain it through the meet’s scheduled final day, Sunday, April 5, 2026. The track’s spring meet runs four days a week, Friday through Monday, with quarter horse racing on Friday and Saturday and thoroughbred racing on Sunday and Monday, according to the track’s schedule postings and reporting by CDC Gaming Reports and the El Paso Times.
Local reporting and industry coverage attributed the move to stronger-than-expected casino results. El Paso Times and CDC Gaming Reports described the decision as “Driven by stronger-than-predicted casino performance and available purse funds,” a rationale that both outlets said underpinned the midmeet enhancement and the denser daily cards.

The purse bump arrives amid active stakes action at Sunland Park. Headlines on the track’s site and in the El Paso Times show Traxion winning the Grade 3 West Texas Derby, listed at $190,212, and Lovely Josie James taking the $80,000 Sunburst Stakes on Feb. 28, 2026. Earlier in the meet, Feb. 15 headlines listed Pavlonian getting the nod in the $500,000 Sunland Derby and Bottle of Rouge winning the $250,000 Sunland Park Oaks, illustrating the high-stakes calendar now strengthened by the new money.
The itemized increases add to $310,000 when summed: $50,000 + $50,000 + $45,000 + $45,000 + $20,000 + $50,000 + $50,000. El Paso Times reporter Felix F. Chavez covered the purse changes and can be reached at fchavez@elpasotimes.com and on X at @Fchavezeptimes for further details. The guaranteed 10-race days and larger stakes promise more racing opportunities and larger purses for connections through April 5, reshaping entries and wagering pools during the meet’s final month.
