Taco Bell workers who believe they were shorted pay, denied overtime, or denied family or medical leave can file confidential complaints with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD). The WHD enforces federal laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, which covers minimum wage, overtime, recordkeeping and child labor rules, as well as the Family and Medical Leave Act and other federal pay protections.

The complaint process is open to current and former employees, third parties and workers regardless of immigration status. As a FindLaw summary puts it, “Third parties can file complaints for an employee denied proper wages,” and “Immigration status is not important. Undocumented workers can file complaints over federal wage law and wage payment violations.” The WHD treats complaints as confidential: “Many investigations are initiated by complaints, which are confidential. The name of the complainant, the nature of the complaint, and whether a complaint exists may not be disclosed.” The agency also notes that “An employer cannot retaliate against a worker for exercising their rights, filing a complaint or cooperating with an investigation.”

To start a claim, gather basic information: your name, contact information, employer name and address, the manager or owner’s name, a description of the work you performed, when the events occurred, and how and when you were paid. Helpful documents include pay stubs, time sheets, written agreements or contracts, fringe benefit policies and W-2 forms.

You can file in multiple ways. Worker.gov lists the options succinctly and directs potential complainants to “Decide how you want to file: Online; By phone at 1-866-487-9243.” Complaints are routed to the nearest WHD field office; the field office will contact the complainant within two business days, work through questions and decide whether to open an investigation. If an investigation “finds sufficient evidence, you’ll receive a check for lost wages,” Worker.gov says. The national WHD hotline is also listed as 1-866-4-US-WAGE.

State agencies operate alongside the federal process and have different rules. Michigan workers can contact local WHD offices in Detroit at (313) 309-4500 or Grand Rapids at (616) 456-2004, or file through the federal WHD. Colorado’s Division of Labor Standards and Statistics requires written forms for Equal Pay Act complaints and allows anonymous submissions; that division cautions that “This form does not start an investigation by our Division, so please do not send the 'Demand for Payment of Wages' form to the Division of Labor Standards and Statistics unless prompted by your assigned investigator,” but adds that “You can send a written demand and file a complaint simultaneously. You do not need to wait 14 days after sending a written demand to then file a complaint with our Division.”

Taco Bell crew members working the grill line, drive-thru or closing shifts who suspect wage violations should collect any pay records and contact the WHD by phone or the online options listed on the Department of Labor site. Note that Worker.gov currently posts a service notice: “This website is currently not being updated due to the suspension of Federal government services. The last update to the site was 2/2/2026,” so calling the WHD hotline may be the quickest way to confirm next steps. Filing a confidential complaint starts an official review that can lead to recovery of unpaid wages and enforcement action, and it preserves protections against employer retaliation.
