Target to open 128,000 sq ft store in Mebane, part of multi-state expansion
Target announced plans Jan. 12 to open a new 128,000 sq ft store at I-40 and Trollingwood Road in Mebane; the move could shift local retail patterns and employment. Residents should expect construction activity and changes to traffic and shopping options.

Target announced Jan. 12 that it will open a new store in Mebane as part of a nationwide rollout of more than 40 new locations. The planned Mebane site, at Interstate 40 and Trollingwood Road, is listed at approximately 128,000 square feet. The company also identified four other North Carolina locations among the new openings: Fayetteville, Fuquay-Varina, Myrtle Grove and Selma.
The size and highway frontage of the Mebane site signal a large-format store that is likely to draw shoppers from across the I-40 corridor. For Alamance County, that means a significant new retail anchor on a busy interchange, with likely impacts on traffic patterns, nearby property use and the local mix of retail offerings. Construction activity will begin only after permitting and site work are complete, and the project will create a period of heavy equipment and truck traffic that residents and commuters should expect.
Economically, a major national retailer locating at a key interchange can broaden the county’s sales-tax base and increase foot traffic for nearby businesses. The store’s large footprint suggests it will be more than a small-format convenience location and could alter customer flows away from smaller downtown shops and independent retailers. At the same time, new retail investment can spur follow-on development — restaurants, service businesses and additional retail — near the interchange, reshaping commercial real estate demand on the I-40 corridor.
Labor-market effects are likely to include both construction employment during the build and permanent retail positions once the store opens. Those jobs can be an important source of entry-level and part-time work in the county, although the net employment effect will depend on whether spending shifts from existing local stores to the new Target.
The announcement fits a broader pattern of national retailers expanding in fast-growing parts of the state. Five North Carolina sites among a 40-plus expansion indicates Target is targeting both established population centers and growing suburbs. For Mebane and Alamance County officials, the arrival of a large retailer will require coordinating traffic management, zoning and community input during the permitting phase.
Residents should watch for construction permits and public notices in coming weeks and for job postings as the project moves forward. The new store will change shopping options along the I-40 corridor and could influence local retail competition, traffic congestion and sales-tax revenues; how those changes play out will depend on the project’s timeline, design and integration with surrounding neighborhoods.
