TCAPS Announces 2026 Test-Out Opportunities for Middle and High School Students
TCAPS will hold high school test-out sessions May 6 at West Senior and May 9 at Central; high school students must submit the HS Test Out Application by April 17, 2026.

Traverse City Area Public Schools announced spring 2026 test-out opportunities that allow students to earn credit toward graduation by examination, with high school sessions set for May 6 and May 9 and middle school sessions during the school day on April 21 and April 22. The district’s release, dated March 2, 2026, lists West Senior High School for the May 6 session from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Central High School for the May 9 session from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
The program invokes state law: "Under Michigan law, high school students have the opportunity to test out of Michigan Merit Curriculum courses in which they can demonstrate proficiency." TCAPS cited Section 1279b as the statutory basis, noting that "Section 1279b is designed to allow students to bypass courses where they have already mastered the required knowledge and skills, enabling them to advance to higher-level coursework." High school students who successfully test out will receive credit toward graduation.
TCAPS spelled out the scoring and transcript rules for earned credit: "To earn credit, they must achieve a minimum score of C+ (78%) or higher on the assessment." Per state guidance quoted in the release, "Per state guidelines, test-out credits will be recorded as 'CR' (credit) on the student’s transcript and will not be factored into their grade point average." That designation has immediate implications for course planning, prerequisites, and GPA calculations for students plotting honors and college-preparation tracks.
High school students must act on timing and procedure: "High school students need to declare their intent to test out by completing the online HS Test Out Application on or before the deadline of Friday, April 17, 2026." The application name and exact deadline are central for seniors and underclass students who hope to replace scheduled courses with higher-level options for 2026-27.
Middle school testing is scheduled inside the school day: TCAPS will administer test-outs on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at West Middle School and on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at East Middle School. The release clarifies the process for middle schoolers enrolled in high-school-level classes: "Current TCAPS middle school students who are enrolled in high school-level math or world language courses as part of their regular schedule do not need to complete a test-out application." The release adds that "These students will take the same test-out exams for math and/or world language as other students, during their regular school day, to earn high school credit."
The district did not list specific Michigan Merit Curriculum course titles beyond the math and world language reference for middle school, and the release did not specify assessment format, retake rules, fees, or whether non-TCAP students may participate. Families seeking those procedural details and scheduling questions are directed to the TCAPS test-out information page maintained by the district.
With an April 17 application cutoff and tests scheduled across late April and early May, TCAPS is giving students a clear calendar to pursue credit by examination under Section 1279b. How families and students use the option to accelerate coursework and reshape class schedules will affect graduation plans and course sequencing for the coming school year.
