The Homer Fund Provides Home Depot Associates Grants, Scholarships and Financial Education

The Homer Fund is a nonprofit charity set up to help Home Depot associates and their families with emergency cash, peer-matched donations and college scholarships. Home Depot’s corporate materials say, "The Homer Fund® provides financial assistance to associates facing unexpected hardships, offers scholarships to associates’ children based on financial need and academic performance, and supports our people with financial information to help them prepare for emergencies."

The program, founded in 1999, distributes help through two primary grant types and a scholarship program. Direct Grants offer immediate assistance for qualifying hardships; Home Depot materials note, "Direct grants of up to $10,000 help associates facing emergencies and tragic events, such as the death of a parent or child, natural disasters, illness or injury, a spouse’s layoff and more." The fund’s FY’20 materials identify illness as the most common reason associates request help and catalog specific qualifying events ranging from major home or car repairs to loss of government subsidy and health insurance premiums while on extended medical leave.

Matching Grants let coworkers raise money for a colleague and have that amount multiplied by the fund. Corporate copy explains, "Matching grants are a unique way the Homer Fund recognizes the generosity of our people toward one another. When associates collect donations for a co-worker in need, their money is matched by The Homer Fund — $2 for every $1 associates collect, up to $5,000 or the associate’s actual need." Matching grants can fill gaps for expenses that are not eligible for a direct grant or boost direct-grant awards.

The Orange Scholars Scholarship program, launched in 2006, targets children or dependents of hourly associates. Home Depot says the program bases awards on "financial need, academic performance, community involvement and leadership" with financial need the top factor. Since the program began, corporate materials report it has awarded scholarships to nearly 19,000 recipients totaling more than $44 million.

Applying for help starts with basic eligibility: all associates - salaried, hourly and temporary - may apply beginning on their first day of employment, but the hardship must have occurred while the associate was employed. A Direct Grant Prep Pack used to guide applicants lists steps that include opening the application form, filling associate information, indicating the qualifying event, specifying requested expenses and completing a financial worksheet to show income and debt. The fund also offers an online eligibility quick-test and educational resources on saving for emergencies and protecting against fraud.

The program’s cumulative figures vary across Home Depot materials. Corporate copy states, "Since 1999, The Homer Fund has awarded nearly 200,000 grants totaling more than $290 million to assist associates and their families facing unexpected hardships." A separate FY’20 summary in fund materials reports "more than 157,000 associates have received support totaling nearly $215 million" and explicitly notes those numbers reflect fiscal 2020. The difference may reflect reporting dates or different ways of counting grants versus distinct associates served.
