Hawaiʻi Island police arrested three adult males after gunshots were heard at a home on the 75-5000 block of Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona; officers say there is no active threat to a nearby school.

Hawaiʻi Island police arrested three adult males Tuesday afternoon after reports of gunshots coming from a residence on the 75-5000 block of Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona, officials said. Officers responded at 1:36 p.m. and located the three men at the home, the Hawaiʻi Police Department said.
“On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 1:36 p.m., police responded to a report of gunshots heard coming from a residence located on the 75-5000 block of Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway,” the HPD media release states. The department said officers found three adult males upon arrival and began a preliminary investigation at the scene.
HPD described the discharge as occurring outside the residence and said that the shooting appeared to be recreational. “A preliminary investigation indicates that firearms were discharged outside the residence, possibly as part of target practice or similar recreational shooting,” the release said. As a result of the probe, “all three individuals were arrested on suspicion of second-degree reckless endangering,” according to police.
The house where shots were reported sits near a school and multiple homes in a nearby subdivision, a proximity HPD highlighted in the release. KITV identified Innovations Public Charter School as the school located closest to the incident, while other outlets and the department noted only that a school was nearby.

Police emphasized there was no ongoing danger to students or neighbors at the time of the arrests. “At this time, police have determined there is no active threat to the school or surrounding community. The investigation remains ongoing,” HPD said. News accounts and the HPD release did not report any injuries, and KITV noted that “the exact model of the guns used was not reported.”
Names, ages and booking details for the three arrested adult males were not released in the HPD statement or subsequent media coverage. The department did not specify whether firearms were seized, whether any property was struck, or whether the nearest school was in session at the time; those items remain unanswered in the ongoing investigation.
