Three Bemidji High Girls Qualify for State at Section 8 Wrestling Finals
Three Bemidji High juniors qualified for the Minnesota girls state wrestling tournament after top-two finishes at the Section 8 finals in Sartell.

Three Bemidji High School wrestlers punched tickets to the Minnesota state girls wrestling tournament with top-two finishes at the Section 8 finals in Sartell. Junior Taylor Merschman captured the 106-pound section title, while juniors Brenalen Fredriksen-Holm (112 pounds) and Mercy McIntyre (235 pounds) finished as runners-up and also qualified for state.
Taylor Merschman claimed the 106-pound championship after advancing from the semifinal with a pin of Moorhead’s Tia Kanneh in 3:33 and beating Monticello’s Phoebe Morris by a 9-5 decision in the final. “Merschman will wrestle at state for the third consecutive season.” She has state experience, having “took fifth place at state as a freshman and fourth as a sophomore,” and will return to Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul for the Feb. 25-26 tournament.
Brenalen Fredriksen-Holm reached the 112-pound final with a 12-1 major decision over Monroe Anderson of Sauk Centre-Melrose, a dominant semifinal result that set up a title match with Monticello’s Roselane D. Verrett. “However, she was pinned by Montocello’s Roselane Verrett in 4:21 to finish in second.” Fredriksen-Holm will make her third state appearance. “Fredriksen‑Holm, a junior, will make her third state appearance Feb. 25-26 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.” Her earlier state pedigree includes a fifth-place finish as a freshman.
Mercy McIntyre reached the 235-pound final after a 3:48 fall over Delano’s Aalliyah Chilton in the semifinal. “After beating Delano’s Aalliyah Chilton by fall in 3:48 to advance to the 235-pound final, McIntyre lost to Sauk Centre/Melrose’s Makenzey Stutzman via pin in 5:25.” “McIntyre, another junior, will be a first-time state participant.” Both McIntyre and Fredriksen-Holm advanced without additional wrestleback matches: “Neither McIntyre or Fredriksen‑Holm had to wrestle for true second.”
Not every Lumberjack bid succeeded. “Chastity Skerik and Dezi Puffe saw their push for state bids come to an end on Saturday.” “Skerik finished in fifth place at 155 pounds, while Puffe claimed sixth at 118 pounds.” The top two finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament, and Bemidji’s trio joined a field that included section winners such as Makenzey Stutzman and Roselane Verrett.
For Beltrami County residents, the results underscore the depth of girls wrestling at Bemidji High and give local supporters concrete opportunities to follow and cheer regional athletes at state. Merschman returns seeking to improve on prior top-five finishes, Fredriksen-Holm arrives with state experience and a major semifinal win behind her, and McIntyre represents a first-time state qualifier at heavyweight.
Next up, Taylor Merschman, Brenalen Fredriksen-Holm and Mercy McIntyre will prepare for the Minnesota state tournament Feb. 25-26 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, where local fans can track their progress as Bemidji aims to translate sectional success into state-level results.
